Looking for translation and also a clarification

Post by dmurphy1940 »

Can someone explain to me what /di/ signifies in some of the names I've found? This file says Avino /di/, Rosa, is that the actual surname?

I think the surname is "Di Avino" (or "D'Avino"). You will find this kind of notation above all in indexes, where surnames composed with "di" "del" "della" are often ordered after the part following (for instance, you might find "Di Avino" after A, "Di Francesco" after F, and so on).

Thank you, Pippo. I'd like to enter the surnames on my tree and wonder if I should list them all the same way, or should I list them as they appear on each record. I sometimes see them each written a little differently.

Also, can you translate this record for me?
Grazie,

Record is dated Dec 21, 1875 at 9:15 a.m. Rosa died today at 2:20 a.m., in the house at #1 Contrada Cortiglio. She was 3 months old, single, without a profession, and the daughter of Baldassare, a peasant/farmer, and Giacomina Capobianco, of the same occupation.

In the current Italian white pages, the surname appears as D'Avino. If you search the Ellis Island records, most of the individuals appear as D'Avino, with only 1 that I see indexed as just Avino.

Thanks so much, Erudita. I think I will list all of them as D'Avino......and maybe put an "also known as" comment as to how it is listed on the record.
