chiusa selef

Post by jfmusso »

Has anybody heard of a small town in Sicily called Chiusa Selef? I've been unable to locate it on maps. It shows up in an immigration document on Ancestry.com as the hometown of a man arriving in New Orleans by ship between 1905 and 1910.

I've been told that when "Chiusa" appears as the first part of a town name, it may not necessarily be a part of the formal town name; that in some cases, it simply refers to the outskirts of the actual town. Is this true?

There may be an error on the document you have been researching,.....
perhaps the name of the town was spelled as it sounded.......
in any case, the closest I could come up with is the following:

Municipalities found:15

CENTALLO - ROATA CHIUSANI (CN)
CHIUSA / KLAUSEN (BZ)
CHIUSA / KLAUSEN - GUDON / GUFIDAUN (BZ)
CHIUSA / KLAUSEN - LAZFONS / LATZFONS (BZ)
CHIUSA DI PESIO (CN)
CHIUSA DI PESIO - SAN BARTOLOMEO (CN)
CHIUSA DI SAN MICHELE (TO)
CHIUSA DI SAN MICHELE - SACRA DI SAN MICHELE (TO)

CHIUSA SCLAFANI (PA)
CHIUSAFORTE (UD)
CHIUSAFORTE - SELLA NEVEA (UD)
CHIUSANICO (IM)
CHIUSANO D'ASTI (AT)
CHIUSANO DI SAN DOMENICO (AV)

I did a search and saw your posting about chiusa. I know you posted this in August but I thought you might like to know that I believe that man you said was from chiusa during that time period is my great grandfather. He came to New Orleans when he was 20yrs old with his soon to be wife whom was from another small town in Sicily. He bought her and himself a ticket and when they got here they eloped According to his son (my grandfather), it was a small town and it is located on the map....I really don't know all that much about it but I could find out....Just let me know...my grandfather is 90yrs old now but still very sharp....otherwise just disregard this.

Hi Jim,
If you will tell me the name of the person you are looking up, I will look at your actual record, but I have seen Chiusa Sclafani misunderstood as Chiusa Selefani and other misspellings. It is a little town in Sicily, part of Palermo Province, but closer to Agrigento.
