Passenger record 1890, arrival NYC
Hi. I'm trying to find a record of my great granfather's arrival in the US, in New York I believe. I believe he left Italy in 1890, but I don't know the name of either the ship he was a passenger on or which port it sailed from. However, he was born and lived on the island of Salina in the Eolie islands so perhaps this means he sailed from Palermo. His name was Francesco Mandile, born in either 1869 or 1870.
His name may be recorded as being part of the crew as I'm told he worked on the ships between Italy and NYC from around when his Marine Certificate was issued from Messina on 1 July 1885. (I would also like some help in getting a copy of this certificate! How to proceed?) Can anyone help?

Re: Passenger record 1890, arrival NYC
Hello we are researching Frank Mandile too. Our records show he was married to Josephina and had 3 daughters in New York. He later moved to Australia in 1916.
Are we looking for the same Frank Mandile?

Re: Passenger record 1890, arrival NYC
Hello, I submitted a post though I am not sure it went through. We are looking for information on Serafina Mandile birth records, father is Frank Mandile. Sisters are Rosina and Maria. the children were born in NYC between 1903 and 1906. We think that when their mother, Josephina died, Frank and the 3 girls moved to Australia. He married again to Annie (nee ____?) who is also Italian.
Any photographs would also be appreciated!
On my side of the family, I am looking for Puricelli (Agostino) and Brasca (Costanza) from the Milan area.
Thanks,
Pam

Here is an extract from 1910 census (I can't access the image):

Seems like the three sisters were in an orphanage. Maybe their mother had already died.

Re: Passenger record 1890, arrival NYC
Hello Pippo,
thank you for some wonderful information! I had seen the census in 1910 but couldn't make sense of it. Yes Josephina died (we don't have a date yet).
So it appears that Frank and the girls moved to Australia in 1916 on the Sonoma. We don't know yet if Frank married Annie (an Italian citizen)in the US or in Australia.
thanks again!

Re: Passenger record 1890, arrival NYC
Never mind - the link worked this time!
So now we know that in 1913 Annie and Frank married. and in 1916 aboard the Sonoma they traveled and settled in Australia. Frank applied for naturalization in 1921.
It looks like a ship of the name Sonoma departed from San Francisco during that time period, but I can't find passenger records for Frank, Annie and the 3 girls.
We are also trying to locate Seraphina's birth certificate.
Thanks again,
Pam
