Re: surname Galli

Post by judd »

I had a visit with my aunt today. She was married to my father's brother until his death a few years ago.
My uncle was in the military for many years and at one point he was stationed in Livarno, Italy. They didn't do any family history while they lived there, but she is absolutely positive that my grandfather, Albert, was Florentine. He had the skin color and the characteristics of the Galli's of Florence. When I told her what we remembered he had said, she said, "Oh, no. He is definitely from the north up by Tuscany or Florence."
She said that my father and his brother both had the same skin tone as the Florentines.
She remembers going to a celebration of some sort where they had a parade of all the clans in their costumes. They had a Galli Horse with 2 roosters pictured on it.

Interesting! Perhaps this will narrow the search down a little.

Hi Judd, so coming from in Tuscany... and no Apulia.... because the surname Galli is tipical of Tuscany region....(!) and especially of Lucca area... so your ancestor has see many ships, because militar in Livorno(Leghorn) that is an great port of Tuscany..... personally I think that your Pete and Albert coming from Saltocchio hamleth of Lucca so the records of ship's manifest already interted here are right:

Before sending for the Italian birthacts, I am going to the Family History Library to see what we can find.
I have a friend that is a Galli and his family is from Lucca. Some of the new information might be about his family. They also settled in the Nevada area.

Thanks for all the information.

A lot of time has passed since I have posted. Life gets a little crazy around the holidays.
We are back into the research now and have a couple of leads.

We found a death certificate for a Peter Galli in Rio Vista, California. He was buried in Rio Vista so we are in the process of finding out which cemetery.

On the death certificate the informant's name is Amadeo Lucchesi. He must have known Peter very well to know that much information about him. So that is a lead for us - to find the Lucchesi family in Venice, California area to see what kind of relationship there was there.

It's all quite a puzzle, but I guess it's the journey that makes it fun and interesting.
Have a great day!

I haven't posted since February, but the reseach has been ongoing. We found the Lucchesi family in Venice, California - Amadeo Lucchesi married, Adele, my grandfather's (Albert Galli) sister. I have since talked to their grandson on the telephone - I talked to my second cousin!!

We have researched our family back to Saltocchio.
My great, great grandparents are Giovanni Galli and Marianna Ciabattari.
Their son is my great grandfather Alexio Galli born 1834-1835 in Saltocchio.
He married my great grandmother, Annunsisti Quilici - born in 1850 in Lammari.

They had 6 children, 3 of whom immigrated to the United States:
Pietro Guiseppi
Umberto Giovanni
Angela Adele

We have not located the other 2 brothers and one sister yet:
Lorenzo Daniele Galli
Giovanni Orlando Galli
Isalina or Isolina Maria Galli

This has been facinating work of many hands. It is so exciting to finally find family on my Italian side.

If anyone has information on any of these relatives, please let us know.
Thanks to all of you for your encouragement and help. It is valuable to us.

I'll post again. Hopefully soon - with more great information.
