John Marco

I recently came across a newspaper article from 1916 which indicated that a John Marco of Staten Island died from wounds suffered during the war. I immediately checked my family tree and found nobody by this name that died in 1916. There are other John Marcos in my tree, but they died long before or after. I asked my Marco cousins and they told me that they knew of no relative that served or died during WW1.

All of the Marcos lived in Staten Island, so we are all very perplexed about this person. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Perhaps it is this John Marco?
Found a 1910 US Census for the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin Orphan Asylum on Staten Island, NY
Listed was John Marco, age 18, whose parents were from Ireland.
He would be the correct age to be serving in WWI in 1916.

Based on that information, I would say that is not one of my relatives. All of my Marco relatives came to America from Anzi, Italy and wound up on Staten Island. Many of them are still there.

Interestingly, when I checked military records on the Fold3 database, there was no John Marco that died in Sept 1916. There is another John Marco that was killed in action a couple months prior.

Maybe he didn't die in Sept 1916, but that was just the date of the news article.

I have also found several newspapers from 1918 that included the list of wounded and dead (without specific dates of death) and included among the "died of wounds" was a John Marco of Staten Island, NY.

Here is Syracuse Herald from 1918 with list of casualties.

Here is states "John Marco, Elm Park, Staten Island, NY"

That last listing from Newsday seems to be the most likely date of death for him. Regardless, I don't believe he is related to me, which is quite frustrating. If he lived in an orphanage, that would explain why his name is Marco, despite having parents from Ireland. The only thing I can think of is that he was adopted by one of my relatives and nobody realized it.
