Looking for surname: Baietto
Looking for surname: Baietto
Looking for any information on the surname Baietto.
My great-grandfather (Domenic) immigrated to USA in 1898.
From what I understand, an ancestor was a master stone cutter for a bridge outside of Laramie (I am unsure of spelling), supposedly about 1 hour's drive from Milan. Our surname was to have been put on that bridge.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Is this your Great Grandfather?
First Name: Domenico (born 1862)
Last Name: Baietto (many went to Illinois...)
Ethnicity:
Last Place of Residence:
Date of Arrival: December 27, 1898
Age at Arrival:  36 yr    Gender:  M    Marital Status:  M ÂÂ
Ship of Travel: La Normandie

On the second page of the manifest, it mentions Turino...

The closest spelling I could find is Lemie which could be the one, as there are about 14 people (listed on the Ellis Island data base) with that surname (exact spelling) coming from Lemie...

Re: Looking for surname: Baietto
WOW!
Thanks so much for all the information - yes, that definately is my great-grandfather.
Also, thanks to your information, I was also able to look up my great-grandmother, who came over in 1900, with the rest of the family!!
All my relatives who would have had any information have died, and I was at a dead end. Thanks again.
Also, is it possible that Lemie and Lemme are the same town? On my great-grandmother's passenger record, it lists her last residence as LEMME, Italy.
Finally, the bridge. I have a picture of the bridge, which looks large enough to handle car traffic, maybe even two lane? It has a small wall on both sides, which can be sat upon, next to where the traffic would travel. There is a marker stone directly under this wall, and in the center of the arch of the bridge, which is inscribed with a capital "C", with a line vertically through it, and the date of 1892 beneath it. I can even post a copy of it if necessary.
Thanks again for all your help - it is quite a moving experience to see records of ancestors who I never had a chance to meet.

Re: Looking for surname: Baietto
If you can post a photo, I would love to see it... if you can't link it, I can certainly help you with that.
You asked a good question... there is a place called "Capriata d'Orba" which includes a town locale of "Valle del Lemme"... which isn't all that far?? from Lemie... 2 hours and 5 minutes... but it looks like their highways aren't like ours... these directions have all kinds of curves... it would certainly take a lot longer to drive... I guess the mountains are the reason...
Here's a map..scroll down (Lemie is the "finish" part of the route...)
http://www.mapquest.com/directions/euro ... =lemie&2z=
If anyone has any info about Lemme, please submit.
I know the feeling...

Re: Looking for surname: Baietto
the town is LEMIE (sure, also if sometimes are wrote with 2 "M" so we read "Lemmie" or "Lemme") in Torino province.. (in other similar spelling, for exemple: Lenna in Bergamo province... the Baietto surname is not present, why this surname is tipical of Torino area)

Hi There
The Family History Center has microfilm for the town of Lemie. It cost about $3.50 a roll for film.
Here is the film numbers.
Lemie, Torino, Italy
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... =1&last=50
I also found a Lemmi, Alessandria, Piedmont, Italy. However, I did not find microfilm for that town. You would have to write directly if this is your
town.
If you check Infobel. There are 11 people in the town of Lemie with the surname Baietto. Go to Infobel to see the rest.

My last name is Baietto. My Grandpa immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island from Lemie Italy. He was just a child. They lived in Kincaid Illinois, my Grandmother still lives there. If you think I could be of any help please feel free to respond. I know some history. Thanks---a Baietto
Re: Looking for surname: Baietto
Headed to Turin and then Lemie Italy to look up more info on the Baietto Family. Helping my husband and his Uncle and Brothers find more about the family. Since this forum was started more than 10 years ago I am wondering if anyone has any updated information we could use when we go over there next month. Thank you in advance!
