That is not him. He was born in 1885 per other records posted here. The family had said that he was born about 1886.

The most recent birth record noted for 1872 is not him. The earlier one posted for 1885 agrees with his age as known by the family and confirmed on census records. Please find the naturalization record for the Vito D'Alessandro/D'Alessandria born in 1885.

rp76226 wrote:Vito D'Alessandro arrived at Ellis Island (or possibly Castle Garden) on March 31 1906 from Mola (mispelled as Molo on the Ellis island record) Bari, Italy at age 30. I don't think that he was born in Mola, because I could not find his birth record looking at years 1874 -1878. He later married Rosa Mandrachia (unknown marriage date) and lived in Pennsylvania. Rosa was born about 1886 and per the 1920 census arrived here in 1900, but per my search, I think it was really 1902. They had two children Mary in 1911 and Charles in 1913. Per the 1920 census, he was naturalized in 1910, but I have not found any record of it in Ancestry.com nor FamilySearch.org.
My friend is trying to help his daughter get Italian citizenship. He believes that he needs to prove that Vito was naturalized before 1913 (I don't know the rules). Would appreciate any help.

Ron
Can you post the records you say you have with his dob as 1885?
Your post above put his birth in the range of 1874-78..
Perhaps the arrival you have is not the correct one...

the main clue is the marriage record, I am pretty sure that by marriage certificate you will descover the parent's names and maybe the birthplace..

Somehow this series of posts for this topic has been split from the original post and its replies for this topic. It is in the original series of posts that the 1875 dob was first mentioned with details. From that, I was able to locate it and here is the link:

I see now that they aren't separated, but that there are two "pages" and this is the second page. The original post with the dob details but not the document is on the first page.

The image link you have posted is for a birth record that is dated 1875 :?:

As suanj :-) stated, I believe the key is the marriage record.

The naturalization record posted above agrees with the US Census 1920 in many ways.
Date of arrival - 1900
Date of naturalization - 1910
Occupation - hod carrier on the naturalization petition/laborer at construction site on census.

My mistake, it should have read 1875 (I went back and edited that post to 1875). His wife would have been born 10 years later.

I went to a NYC Genealogy site after a previous post in this series gave the wedding details as February 6, 1910 in Brooklyn, NY with Vito's name spelled slightly differently, but with the right wife. Links don't work on it plus it pastes poorly but you can make it out.

That also works with the naturalization record that was posted, and suanj's findings :-)

On the Petition for Naturalization (which is dated 6 October 1909) Vito is unmarried.
He then takes his Oath of Allegiance on 25 March 1910, which is reflected in the 1910 date of naturalization on the 1920 census.

Try to confirm his address on the marriage record, and also with the naturalization record (Central Ave, Bklyn), as well as with the 1910 Census... to verify these are all the same person.

EDIT TO ADD***
The naturalization petition address is 153 Central Avenue, Bklyn
Here is a 1915 NYS Census for the family (Vito, wife listed as Marie - age difference agrees, children - May [Marie?]age 4. and Charles, age 2.
They are residing at 218 Suydam St., Bklyn - which is around the corner from 153 Central Ave.

This Vito Leonardo D'Alessandro died in Mola on 21 Sep 1961.. he is not your ancestor... your ancestor right surname spelling is Dalessandria or D'Alessandria, and my find is correct... on 1872 another Vito Dalessandria was born, but in March and the his father was Gaspare; he imm. in 1901 with the wife Giuseppina Callaci (Josephine in USA), and on this second Vito born on Mar 1872, well on the his Birth act it are the marriage note wrote on 1900 abt the marriage to Giuseppina Callaci.

Instead on the Birth act of your ancestor Feb 1872, no marriage note, because he married in USA...
I believe that these 2 Vitos was cousins, and immigrated: your Vito on 1900 and the second Vito with wife on 1901, all living in Brooklyn, New York, NY...

It is very easy to make errors in a genealogical search, and for that we are able to help anyone, because we have experience and before to post something here, we must be very sure that all matching..

Re: Vito D'Alessandro Naturalization record

Post by rp76226 »

I think it is time to recap the key, relevant information found and compare:

- The 1910 Brooklyn marriage found, based on the wife's name is them. That website does not give parents names nor addresses.
- The 1920 and 1930 census found are for the same address and same family and right ages of the family members which implies that Vito was born around 1875-6. For whatever reason, the name of the wife in 1920 agrees with the known name of Rosa/Rosaria, but the 1930 census has her as "Francie".
- The 1915 census also seems to be them based on family names and ages including their 2 children, at a different address, but here the wife's name is "Marie" in this one.
- So on the three census, the only questionable fact seems to be the wife's name. On all three census, Vito's implied year of birth is 1875-6. That would appear to rule out the February 6, 1872 birth record that was found and give credence to the 1875 birth record that was found.

While I was typing this, I just got a call from my D'Alessandro friend who asked me to do this research. He just received a call from his sister who searched and found a stack of old papers that apparently has Vito's Naturalization record. It is from 1910, with a record # 131670. It has his name with age at 38 (implies 1872 date of birth), and his wife's name with age at 25. It lists the day as 25th but the month is blank, which seems odd. My friend's daughter, who would be Vito's great granddaughter, and therefore granddaughter of Vito's son Charles, born in 1913, wanted to get italian citizenship so that she could live and work in Europe. However, because this confirms that her grandfather Charles was NOT born in Italy, apparently this disqualifies her from easily obtaining italian citizenship. The great grandfather, being born in Italy, apparently doesn't qualify her to apply for Italian citizenship. Apparently, it would now take her a 10 year process to apply for Italian citizenship according to my friend. Is their information correct? They also are wondering if they can find the documentation that Vito would have been required to give when he was naturalized. Can they get that paperwork, and if yes, how?
