Contrada Francari prior to 1783: in Gioiosa Guardia or Patti?

Post by VotM »

My father's father's family resided in Contrada Francari in Gioiosa Marea (Messina, Sicily) for as far back as I can trace in the civil records (1820-1940), and in the 1811-1816 Riveli. As I prepared to take the next step back into the Riveli, to 1748, I realized that the "Gioiosa" in the 1748 records refers to Gioiosa Guardia, not Gioiosa Marea.

If I understand correctly, the land for Gioiosa Marea came from the family Giardina di Patti. This made me wonder: in the mid 1700's, would the area currently defined as Contrada Francari be in the records for Gioiosa Guardia, or for Patti?

Gioiosa Guardia was almost destroyed by the earthquake of 1783 (previous earthquake on 1738), so all people survived movedin the new land ( new land of Giardina family of Patti) and created a new village called Gioiosa Marea...
of Gioiosa Guardia and her many "contrade" remaining just the ruins.. Francari is a contrada of Gioiosa Marea..
so until 1783 the records are abt Gioiosa Guardia, and then abt Gioiosa Marea, but the people are the same, the Gioiosa Marea records are the records starting from Gioiosa Guardia survivors...

In the church archive of Gioiosa Marea there are the registers of baptisms, marriages and deaths of Gioiosa Guardia starting from the end of XVI century.

Welcome back, and thanks!

Not long after posting my question, I found a clear pointer to a more distant relative in my family tree within Gioiosa Guardia's 1748 Riveli. Due to the gap in years for the records at FamilySearch (1748, 1811), it is not clear from the Riveli whether there is an intervening generation that I am missing. The church archive is my next logical place to pursue further research.

The church records of Gioiosa Guardia are not available online, neither in microfilm. So you have to consult them in person, or hire a genealogist. In case you want to hire a genealogist, I am at your disposal.

The latter is my most likely option. I sent a note to you this morning via your web page.
