Finding My Grandpas family (Cataldo)

Post by wellohio »

Trying to locate Family roots again.

My Grandpas name was Donato Cataldo born july 29 1893 in Angri, Italy. He came over from Capurso, Italy to New York, NY in july 29 1902 on the SS Spartanzo. He came with John Mendell 1867 and Sandello Mendell 1865. These were not his parents. He was either given to or adopted by them.

Now the rumor goes that either his mother lived at this house and his father worked the fields, or his father lived there and his mother worked the fields. So we're not sure if Cataldo is the mothers or fathers name.

ANY help would be much appreciated!!!!

Hi suanj,

I have seen this from another source. Would there be a Baptism record to look at? You don't get your child baptized and say you don't want your name on it. Would that even be possible? Where would I look for that or what church would I write to??

Also, Where would one look if a couple referred to the child as their foster son. Did they just give the child to these people or is there paperwork somewhere?

Hi Sharon,
the child was baptized, surely... I believe so...
but you can ask a full copy of his Birth act, writing in Salerno archive.... so you can know the informant and all possible infos given by informant to Birth registration... more over of this source, there is no other source...
best regards,

Sharon,
Donato was never legally adopted, because he had his own name for all life, given at Birth... you have the ship's manifest?

I believe that Amendola/Mendell family was just the family who raised Donato as a own child, no adopted legally, but beloved surely... and then immigrated in USA....
