Provenzano or Perciavalle, in Amantea

Post by blorelli »

While researching ancestors online, I found some records which appear to note a name change, from Provenzano to Perciavalle, but I cannot fully translate the several pages.

The first page was from a birth record number 97, of July 18, 1870, in Amantea, Italy, for a Vincenzo Provenzano, and it is attached.

Later in that year’s appendices, there were several other pages which appear to go into detail about this name change from Provenzano to Perciavalle (the files were too large to attach).

Can someone help me to translate the record, and let me know the main points of these recordings? If needed, I can e-mail the other pages for review.

Thank you.

Could you post the link to the other records so we can take a look?

The record you posted (#97) makes an official correction to the birth record.
The father's surname is Perciavalle, instead of Provenzano.

Hi Pippo :-)
It is the image (and following pages) on the right side - The Sentence of the Tribunale.
It is very faded and difficult to read.

It basically states that Vincenzo Provenzano appeared before the court to request the correction of his surname in the birth register from Provenzano to Perciavalle. He presented to the court the evidence of his parents' Solemn Promise of marriage on 24 August 1831, and his birth act of 11 May 1833.
Based on the first name of the father, and the correct name of the mother on the birth act, the court required a correction be made and entered into the birth register for that year (1870) of its decision ... that is #97 in the register that you originally produced. The court declared that an error was made by the clerk in recording the birth naming the father Giuseppe Provenzano, instead of Perciavalle. The court decision corrected this in 1870.

Hi Pippo! :-D
Yes, the name in the column was distracting.
Vincenzo appears about 7 lines down in the record inserted into the book. :-)
Do you agree with my summary?

Yes, I do! :-)
Maybe it's interesting for blorelli (don't know if he/she already has this info) to know that Giuseppe was the son of Nunziato and Teodora Rizzo, and his wife was Ursola ? Simari daughter of Benigno.

Tessa and Pippo, thank you very much for the information. However, I wanted to see if you could help to clarify a few things.

The record #97 officially recognized that the Vincenzo’s father’s name should have been Giuseppe Perciavalle, instead of Giuseppe Provenzano. Was Vincenzo’s mother actually Ursola Simari Benigno? I am asking this because I have found, in my other research, that there actually was a Giuseppe Provenzano that was married to Ursola Simari Benigno on August 24, 1831, and they had several other children (1835, 1837 and 1841) that were officially recognized as part of that family.

And besides Giuseppe Provenzano, my research showed that there were several other sons / daughters of Nunziato Provenzano and Teodora Rizzo.

Did any of those other pages indicate the names of the father and mother of Giuseppe Perciavalle?

(I have been using “Archivio di Stato di Cosenza” for much of my research, as well as “Familysearch.org” where those attached records were found)

The ink is so faded on the Tribunale records... perhaps we are misreading it?
The marriage noted in the act was that of Giuseppe Provenzano and Ursola Simari in 1831 (24 August), and Giuseppe was the son of Nunziato Provenzano and of Teodora Rizzo.

PERHAPS - the record is to clarify the surname from Perciavalle TO Provenzano?
The marriage act was used as evidence by Vincenzo (so proving that he was Provenzano, not Perciavalle?)
No references to a Giuseppe Perciavalle. The only Giuseppe Perciavalle I could find in Cosenza Archives was the son of Antonio Perciavalle and Luisa Pellegrini, born in 1809.
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680706
Municipality of AMANTEA. Volume number 1, document number 54 page -
Giuseppe Perciavalle born on 29/09/1809
son/daughter of Antonio Perciavalle, corriere, 27 years and of Luisa Pellegrini

We may be reading the 1870 correction incorrectly - and Vincenzo's birth act was written as Perciavalle INSTEAD of Provenzano (4th and 3rd lines from bottom of #97)
Do you have the original birth act of Vincenzo in 1833? That would help :-)
It would give an annotation of the court correction.

Here is the Vincenzo Provenzano listing in Cosenza Archives

SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680706
Municipality of AMANTEA. Volume number 26, document number 37 page -
Vincenzo Provenzano born on 11/03/1833
son/daughter of Giuseppe Provenzano, sartore, 30 years and of Ursola Simari, 22 years

And for a Vincenzo Perciavalle (in 1829, not 1833)
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680706
Municipality of AMANTEA. Volume number 22, document number 11 page -
Vincenzo Perciavalle born on 29/01/1829
son/daughter of Giuseppe Perciavalle, speziale, 40 years and of Marianna Messina, 30 years

EDIT TO ADD:
These corrections to birth records often happen when a marriage is planned. Producing a copy of the birth act reveals the error, and must be corrected for the marriage to move forward. Do you know if Vincenzo was married around 1870?

Tessa, thank you for looking further into this question. I do not have the original birth act for Vincenzo Provenzano, born in 1833. The Cosenza Archives are having problems and they cannot post the record.

You also suggested that maybe Vincenzo Perciavalle was the person born in 1829 to Giuseppe Perciavalle and Marianna Messina. However, after further investigation in the Cosenza archives, that Vincenzo Perciavalle died as a child in 1832.

I could not translate those other faded pages from 1870, but I thought they may have indicated the basis for Vincenzo’s request to change the name of his father to Perciavalle. I still think you were originally interpreting that correctly.

Your comment about Vincenzo getting married, and needing to clear up the record is a good suggestion. I have not found a potential marriage for this Vincenzo in 1870 yet, but I will keep looking.
