for records # 296
the deceased is the wife of Vincenzo Pagano, 'a Germano del detto Crescenzo...." [Crescenzo di Stefano is the first name listed as appearing b/f town officials.] what does this mean?

google translates this as "germane to the said Crescenzo."

thanks,
donna

Hi Donna

As usual I'm racing out the door. My understanding is that they were syblings.

Germano: Brother
Germana: Sister

I remember seeing this in my own records so I hope I'm correct.

angela,
i wondered if in fact germano was an older word for gemello (twin). i hadn't considered that would be brother.

between google translates and a dictionary i have that translates it as either German OR mallard...rather confusing

thanks for taking the time as your rushed out.

It means they were born from the same parents; brother/sister as Angela stated

You are welcome, Donna. I'd come across this before and written it down in my vocab list. The brother was approximately seven years older so he couldn't be a twin, but I understand what you mean.

Mallard - serious!!!! That's very interesting, and yes, confusing. German I can relate to, (but I think the word for German might be Tedesco, or maybe it's both. The word Tedesco always confuses me - it doesn't sound anything like German, but then it doesn't need to. It's just perception.)

Erudita: Thank you for confirming.

Happy to confirm, Angela. Yes, mallard is one translation of the word germano. I personally prefer using trecanni, but even on word reference, a search of the word will give you an option for the correct translation-3rd option.

Thank you, Erudita. So basically germano would be used for both genders. (There is no germana - correct?)
