Great Grandmother
Friends ~
Hi again! I posted on this family line before, but I gathered some new info so I'm seeking more help, please. It's about my great grandmother.
Her birth name was Charlotte (Carlotta) Colella. I have July 26, 1903, as a DOB. Another report reads "around 1899" which could be 1903. She was born Caserta, Campania. Her mother was Marie Ciampa (her maiden name) who may not have been married at the time of giving birth to Charlotte.
I'm searching for a birth record if possible. I'd love to have her father's full name and confirm her place of birth.
Thank you!!

Re: Great Grandmother
I checked 1903 births in the town of Caserta didn't find a Charlotte (Carlotta) Colella.
Why do you think she is from Caserta?
Did she come to the USA? Do you have a shipmanifest?

Re: Great Grandmother
I searched for Charlotte Colella when I first saw your post, but with no success.
A few questions:
From what record did you get her July 1903 birthdate?
Do you believe she was born in Caserta Province, or comune of Caserta?
Mother, Maria Ciampa - did she marry at some time? The name of her husband?
Can you tell me the name of Charlotte's husband -
Years of immigration for mother and daughter?

Re: Great Grandmother
One other problem with searching is that the records at FamilySearch for "Italy, Caserta, Conca della Campania" only appear to run from 1809-1865. Ditto for the birth records for "Italy, Caserta, Campagnano".

Hi Marty. Thank you for responding and checking for me.
I think she was born in Caserta because that's what my mother was told growing up. My great grandmother's obituary says she was "born is Casseta, Italy, July 26, 1903". I always assumed "Casseta" was a typo for Caserta.
According to family history, she was said to come here around the age of six, but I don't have a shipmanifest. She worked in a factory in NYC as a little girl and had to stand on boxes to reach the work area.

Hi Teresa. Thank you for responding and checking for me.
My mother actually remembered Charlotte's birthday since she was her grandmother and they were very close. I also have her date of birth from her obituary. July 26, 1903.
I assumed she was born in the province of Caserta rather than the comune. Her obituary says "Casseta" but I assumed that was a typo for Caserta.
Yes, Maria Ciampa, Charlotte's mother, married Anthony Gallucci after she arrived in the States. Charlotte was already born at the time so Anthony was her step-father, not her biological father.
Charlotte's husband (my great grandpa) was Alfred Scungio (Scuncio).
I'm guessing the year of immigration to be around 1909. I'm basing this on Charlotte's year of birth and informal family records stating she was six years old upon arriving in the U.S. But it could have been a little sooner or a little later.
Thanks so much!!

Do not give up!
I located this application (Sons of Italy Mortuary Fund) and claim for Charlotte Scungio, wife of Alfredo Scungio.
Death in 1961, birth listed as July 1903.
The interesting thing is that on the application (in Italian) she lists her name as Pasqualina Scungio (Record #15069) born 26 July 1903. She lists her marriage to Alfredo Scungio as August 1919, and her address in 1940 as S. Jefferson St. New Castle.
http://interactive.ancestry.com/1773/32 ... 1987-02790
The second image is her death certificate identifying her as Charlotte Scungio (same info) and a birth place of Casserta, Italy (more than likely you are correct about Caserta!). Her address at death is Division St., New Castle. Her SS# is included here. You might send for her SS-5 (application) which may have more specifically identified her place of birth and her father's name.

Pasqualina is odd! I've never heard that name at all. I'll my mother about it. And I'll buy a membership with Ancestry.com to access the links you posted.Tessa78 wrote:Do not give up!

Her "mystery history" has intrigued me for years. Lol. The funny thing is - my grandmother and mother were very close to her but never asked questions. And my grandmother was close to her grandmother (Charlotte's mother), yet never asked questions. In those days, they probably didn't for many reasons.
THANK YOU, again, so much for your help. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Just to make things more interesting...
There is an index record for several Ciampa's that came through Boston in September of 1909 aboard the Romanic. Of note are Maria (age 45), another Maria (age 19), and Pasqualina (age 6).
