marriage record Barolomeo Stella

Post by Jen5525 »

found the marriage record for Bartolomeo Stella and Angela Rotunno, married Sept 1849. Can anyone assist with translating the record. Most of it is handwritten and I'm having trouble making out the names.

I've made a start and got the important info here for you. There are couple of words in this document that I am not familiar with so maybe wait until someone else has looked at this. I'm understanding that Bartolomeo was born in Altamura but that his parents, who are living in Gravina at the time of the marriage, probably were not. I think they were born in Gravina, so, if this is the case (someone will verify), that is where you need to look for their birth records if they are on line. (This is one of the reasons why it is always good important to work backwards and find the marriage record first, and then go for the birth certificates. The marriage record gives you not only the ages, the names of the parents but also the birth place/s and any other important info, for example as in in this case, that the bride had been married before.)

Marriage No 56: Bartolomeo Stella and Angela Rotunno
Altamura: 13 September 1849, 4 pm
Groom: Bartolomeo Stella, 27 yo, born Altamura, and living in Altamura, Muratore (mason/bricklayer), Strada del Vado, son of Vitantonio, Calzolaio (cobbler/shoemaker), and of Oronzia Maria Solfrizzi, both living in Gravina.

Bride: Angela Rotunno, widow of Carlo Battista, 29 yo, born in Altamura, living in Strada del Vado, daughter of Pasquale, zappatore (digger), and of Laura Loiudice, living Altamura.

Right Side:
The marriage was celebrated on 24 September 1849 at the Cathedral.

Page 3:
Allegati that was presented (briefly):

1. Birth Act of the Groom
2. Birth Act of the Bride
3. Death Act of the bride's first husband, which happened in this town on 4 October 1846.
4. Consent of the parents of the groom
5. Extract of Notfication made in this town on 10 June current year
6. A certificate showing that there was not opposition to the marriage................

4. Consent of the parents of the groom dated 28 August. (I can't decipher all the words but basically I'm understanding that a document was prepared by a Notary by the name of Don Giuseppe Montemurro.)
5. Extract of Notfication made in the town of Conversano, the place of birth of the groom, dated 10 June of the current year.
6. A certificate issued from the town of Conversano, dated 4 July, certifying that there was no opposition to the marriage.
7. Extract of Notification made in Gravina, the last place of residence of the groom, dated 5 August current year.
8. A certificate dated 23 August, current year, from the town of Gravina stating that there was no opposition to the marriage taking place. (He was free to marry.)
9. Extract of Notification made in this town (Altamura), the place of birth and residence of the bride.
10. A certificate issued from this town (Altamura), on the same day, certifying that there was no opposition to the marriage.

angela....found a sibling of Bartolomeo! have to look for the actual record (about to leave for the airport). but here she is (Rosa) in the index. Your help translating his marriage record helped me find this, so I'm very grateful. I would never have found her because I would have looked in altamura not conversano

Great! Here is Rosa's record:

Birth No 208: Rosa Stella
Conversano: 15 June 1823, 1 pm
Vitantonio Stella, 40 yo, Sellaro (saddler), living in this town (Conversano), appeared to present a baby girl, (then it says “of the gender male???? – obviously an error). She was born to Vitantonio Stella, the declarant, 40 yo, and to Oronzia Maria Solfrizzi, 34 yo, Filatrice, living in this town, on 14 June 1823, at 2 am. The baby girl was given the name Rosa.

Right side are the Baptism details:
Baptised 15 June 1823 by Don Simone Carvatti?

Page 2 are just the names of the witnesses.

Have a great trip. I'll have a look for Bartolomeo's record later.

found Bartolomeo's birth record in 1821!
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

But while I was looking...also found a listing for a Costantino Stella in the index for 1822. Not familiar with the notation after his name: N. P. No parents names are listed. Can't find the actual record in the Conversano births for that year. looks like the records start in June...so maybe some didn't get scanned?

It's a Latin abbreviation "N.P. et M..e" which I understand means that the father and mother were unknown. Interesting that they gave the baby a known surname in the town. Usually foundlings are given an invented name, so the parents were "possibly" known?

I flicked through some records yesterday looking for Bartolomeo. Well done, you've found him. Anyways, I came across other records pertaining to Vitantonio and Oronzia Maria so I will just leave them here for you to look at. I quickly typed up the details as I found the record so they just might not be perfect, so just check the info off against the record as you go. I haven't closely checked what I have typed and I need to go out shortly. My thinking is, that if I post them here, it might save you a little time.

Death No 13: Rosa Stella
Died Conversano, 23 January 1819, daughter of Vitantonio Stella and Oronzia Maria Solfrizzi. She was 7 days old.

Conversano: 4 November 1819, 10 pm
Appearing was Vitantonio Stella, 36 yo, Sellaro, living Conversano and he stated that on the above date at 10 am was born in his own house to his legal wife, Oronzia Maria Solfrizzi, and to himself, a baby boy who he presented and gave the name Bartolomeo.

(Bartolomeo was baptised at 11 pm on 4 November 1819.)

Yes, very sad and often the case. Over the weekend I had a look to see if I could find Vitoantonio and Oronzia's marriage record, to take you back further, but didn't see it there, which either means I missed it, they got married in another town, or pre online records. Maybe, at some time you might like to look for other childrens marriage records to see what information you can get there. It might help you to establish a time frame of when and where Vitantonio and Oronzia died. Their death records will have their respective parent's names on them.

thanks Angela. that is definitely going to be my plan of attack! It seems to me that both Vitantonio and Oronzia were older for the births of their children, so I suspect that I will find their death records at some point. I imagine that they may also have other children that predate the ones we've found, since Vitantonio mid 30s to mid 40s at the time of the births we've located. However, the records for Conversano only go back to 1818, so they may be difficult to find. I'm going to scroll through them, as well as death records, and see if I can locate more. Very thankful for the help you've provided so far!
