Need assistance/input on researching my great-grandfather.

Post by C_Artale »

I've become fairly well-versed on researching US records (census, newspapers, directories, etc) but when it comes to records from Italy, I could use some help. I've hit a dead end of sorts.

I've attached information about my great-grandfather to this post (PDF), which includes his obituary and some manifest info.

Thank you.

Thank you. Looks like I'll have to create a FamilySearch account to view the records.

Hi,
I don't found the Pietro Birth on 1876, the 1875 lacking... but if I am right by ship's manifest seeming born before of 1876... I found :
Monreale 23 Dec 1871 #518: Pietro Artale son of Antonino Artale 36 old and Castrenza Palizzi 35 old.

In the 1920 census, his birth is estimated as circa 1871.
(I need to check the 1925 NY census, I think I have it at home, it's not attached to my MyHeritage account yet).
In the 1930 census, his birth is estimated as circa 1876 (matching his obituary).

I may have found him in Chicago on the 1910 census, but I'm not certain (birth is estimated as circa 1873). On that census I found Peter Artell (not Pietro Artale). Artell could be a misspelling but it's odd that the first name is Americanzed then but not later. This "Peter Artell" is listed as a doctor (in Chicago) from Southern Italy, which my great-grandfather was. That's why I thought it could possibly be him in Chicago, 1910.

EDIT
:

I looked at the 1925 NY census on Familysearch, birth there is estimated as circa 1872.

Thanks for the help.

I went to city hall and requested his death certificate (not sure why I hadn't done that sooner). :?
It further confirmed that he was the son of Antonino Artale and Castrenza Polizzi. It erroneously listed his birth year as 1876.

Coincidentally, in that index of baptisms (posted by Adelfio) for Antonino Jr., at the bottom of the right hand page (opposite page from Antonino's listing) there's a daughter with the same parents: Catarina Artale Born April, 12 1867? Do I have that right?

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2046915

I found her on 34-146, baptized on the 12th?

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2046915

Is there any other info about Catarina I should be aware of in those records? There's a bunch of stuff written in the left margin on 34-146.

Hi,
abt Catarina, yes, she was baptized on 12th but born on 11th, because on the baptism record it is wrote ".. born Yesterday.."
the note at bottom is a amendment pertaining the above baptism record, abt correction of surname, Salvatore Corleone and no Salvatore Troja...
regards,
suanj

Thank you. :)

I also found three other daughters of Antonino Artale and Castrenza Polizzi in that index of baptisms:

Pietre Artale, born Nov 4 1869*
Carolina Artale born Mar 10 1880*
Maria Concetta Artale born Feb 13 1876*

*I'll post the links to their records later today, as I bookmarked them at home. I may not have the days of birth exactly right.
