Do I have dual citizenship?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Do I have dual citizenship?

Post by Wetseal40 »

My father born in Italy came to America with his mother, she took some English classes and took a test and became citizen, my father was a minor, and I was told because he was very young, he became a citizen because his mother did.

I do NOT believe he ever took any test....does this mean he had dual citizenship?.... I was born here, does this mean I have dual citizenship??
Appreciate all answers in help in finding this out

Based on his mother's naturalization before his birth, he became a US citizen and lost Italian citizenship. He did not have to take a test. He naturalized with his mother.

Any information about his father? If his father did not naturalize, he may have retained citizenship.

I may have written it to misunderstood.. My dad and his momcame to America as immigrants....My father was 6 years old...I was told grandma took some English classes just enough to pass the test and became a citizen. I was told my father automatically became bc he was a minor. Did he (deceased) had dual citizenship and do I? I was born here. My grandpa left them in italy came here, paid a notary n became a citizen

if both your grandparents naturalized, your father lost citizenship as a minor. It is called derivative naturalization, and it results in loss of Italian citizenship. Sorry.

This case is determined by your grand-father's actions, not your grand-mother's actions. No, you do not have dual citizenship because when your grand-father became an American citizen he lost his Italian citizenship and his minor son back in Italy became an American citizen and lost his Italian citizenship at the same time. The action of the father affects the minor child. When your father came to the US with his mother, he was already an American citizen and any action that his mother may have taken for her own status had no affect on him.

Thank you all for all your replays...this site is amazing. I no longer have any connections in finding out this history. I am trying hard to find out the house my father grew up in, in. riposto so I can google earth it..I know I will. Never be able to afford the enormous cost of traveling to Riposto, so google earth the next best thing. If anyone knows the ins and outs of how to, please send it my way..thanks everyone, you are all so kind..

I don't think all hope is necessarily lost. You said: "My father born in Italy came to America with his mother, she took some English classes and took a test and became citizen, my father was a minor, and I was told because he was very young, he became a citizen because his mother did." You need to confirm whether he naturalized with your mother for sure. Also, you might run this by Luigi Paiano to see if he can make a case for you.

The above information is not correct. Both of the parents in this case were Italian. The father naturalized first and the son was naturalized along with his father. The mother's actions have no bearing as the child was already American and had already lost his Italian citizenship. A case like this might work if the Italian mother had married a non-Italian but that's not what happened here.

Wow, so very confusing....Id like to clear up if I may... First off both grandparents and father were born in Sicily .Grandpa left grandma along with my dad in Sicily.... I was told he joined the Italian Merchant Marines....He was not liking the way things were happening in Italy bc of Mussolini, so one time he jumped ship and stay in America...found a notary and paid him $20 to become a citizen.

He then went back to Italy to get Grandma and my father... brought them back to America. Grandma took some english classes and took a citizens test.... dont know if they had to go thru Ellis Island or not.... so. ...I dont ever ever remembering my father saying that he took any kind of test... so folks just wondering if he had dual and if that means, I have it as well...it seems lots of different views has responded....

What you really need to do is ignore the family information and check official records. If your grandparents naturalized while your father was a minor, he lost Italian citizenship with them. If there is no evidence of naturalization, you are good to go.

The "test" is meaningless; it is the naturalization that counts.
