Hello,
I have sent several emails to the citizenship office of the Italian Consulate in Miami with my question, but I have not received a phone call or reply email ...
I am helping my sister, a Florida resident, to apply at the Italian consulate of Miami for recognition of her Italian citizenship via jure sanguinis. In 2008 our mother applied at the same Italian Consulate in Miami. At that time my mother provided all original paperwork for herself and her Italian born father. My mother did receive recognition of her Italian citizenship in 2009.
I believe that my sister's citizenship application only needs to contain paperwork that applies to herself since she is applying at the same Italian consulate as our mother. My sister has a copy of the letter of citizenship that my mother received from the Miami consulate.
Is it safe to assume that my sister can reference our mother's 9 year old file at the Italian Consulate in Miami when she applies and thus only provide paperwork for herself?
Also in 2014, my mother passed away. I contacted the Vital Records office of the Italian Consulate in Miami to provide a copy of my mother's Florida death certificate, apostille and translation ... which makes me wonder about what happens to a person's file when the person passes away ... is it still available for descendants to reference?
Thank you in advance for any assistance!
Nancy

Re: Referencing an ancestors's citizenship application paperwork at Italian Consulate?
My companion was recognized in 2011. Recently one of his adult children expressed an interest in also becoming recognized through the same consulate. My companion was informed that his child only need provide his own birth and marriage information, a copy of the letter from the consulate confirming his father's recognition and a copy of the information that was transcribed by the ancestral commune after the recognition. By the way after his recognition, my companion never received an Italian birth certificate from his commune. Nor did I ever receive an Italian birth certificate from my ancestral commune so this is something you should not have to be concerned about.

Things should go very smoothly for your sister.
As jennebet notes, there is no need to obtain your own Italian birth certificate but it is easy to get, and I loved having the official registration of my birth from my comune. Makes it all seem real, even more so than the passport.

Ciao Mler .... yes, my sister will have it fairly easy since she can reference our mother's paperwork. My citizenship was recognized a year ago after I applied through the Italian Consulate in Philadelphia. I provided my own set of original US and Italian documents for my grandfather, mother and myself. Then after 14 months I received my letter of citizenship. Like you, I love having my official Italian papers from my comune, Ronciglione in the region of Lazio... having the Italian passport is nice too!
Arrivederci!

Hi Caterina. I also applied in Philly back in 2000 and was recognized within six months. Things have changed though these days as it takes longer -- but eventually we can all get there with the proper documents. I moved to Abruzzo right after I got my passport and I have been here ever since.Caterina05271899 wrote: 10 Feb 2017, 22:15 Thank you jennabet for your helpful reply! Grazie e Arrivederci!

My understanding is that there are no hard and fast rules on how long each consulate keeps old files. Some destroy them after a couple of years, others don't. To be on the safe side, you may want to collect all the documents needed, including apostilles and translations.

I was recognized by the Philly consulate in 2000. In 2015, my sister visited the consulate to add her own documents to my file and all of my information was still there. My sister saw the documents I had given the consulate 15 years earlier. I have never heard of a consulate destroying files after a couple of years.

I have. It sounds like Philly doesn't, but Boston is requiring some people to get all of the documents anew several years after a parent or sibling applied (http://italiancitizenship.freeforums.or ... ack#p77145).
