Maria Desallo (married to Antonio Mea/Mayo)
Maria Desallo (married to Antonio Mea/Mayo)
Hi,
I am having trouble finding information on my gg grandmother Maria Desallo (born abt 1870). I suspect her maiden name, Desallo is wrong as I could not locate it on any of the surname maps or Italian white pages.
Most of the facts I have are based on US records.
Maria married my gg grandfather Antonio Mayo (originally Mea), I believe in 1886, which I believe the is the same yr she arrived. They spent their entire lives in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.
Somehow the Mea surname morphed to Maio and Mayo.
Antonio Mayo's birth yr is unclear. SS death notice shows his birthday as Feb 7, 1867 (died May 15, 1948). However, census' show his birth about 10 yrs earlier in 1857. He was born in Teggiano, Salerno to Guiseppe Mea and Maria Guiseppa Vertuccio. As far as I know he had a sister Saveria (1861-1921, married to Cono La Rocco, in Teggiano) and a brother Savino (1868-1936), married to Filomena Fusco, in NY.
Antonio and Maria's children:
Guiseppina/Josephine (1888-1980)
Guiseppe/Joseph (1890-?)
Nicholas (1893-1970)
Michael (1897-1979)
Rosina (my great grandmother) (1899-1992)
Frank (1900-1967)
I do not have any information on Maria's parents or place of birth (other than being Italy). Based on the area in Brooklyn lived with Antonio, I would guess Teggiano or somewhere in Napoli (Nola or Palma Campania).
I am looking for Antonio and Maria's marriage record or Antonio's naturalization record. I was also not able to locate ship manifests for either.
Anyone believe Maria's maiden name is wrong?
Here's some of the documents I gathered (Ancestry links + link to an image of the document in case you don't have Ancestry). I apologize if it is information overload, but I figured I'd share everything I had because sometimes there's a hidden clue.

Re: Maria Desallo (married to Antonio Mea/Mayo)
I searched for marriage of Antonio and Maria in NY, but have not found it yet. Will need to try more variations on the names...
Meanwhile, here is the index listing for the marriage of Savino Mayo and Filomena Fusco from the NYC index.
Mayo Savino Oct 24 1895 #16973 Manhattan
Fusco Filomena Oct 24 1895 #16973 Manhattan
It is POSSIBLE that your gggm's surname was De Salvo, found in both Naples and Salerno Provinces.
Even found today in small numbers in the Town of Teggiano

Thank you. De Salvo might be a possibility. I'm going to search the Teggiano archives.Tessa78 wrote: ↑04 Apr 2017, 23:09 I searched for marriage of Antonio and Maria in NY, but have not found it yet. Will need to try more variations on the names...

I am not sure this is the same Antonio Meo. According to Antonio's death information, his parents were Giuseppe and Maria Giusseppe Vertucci.

Re: Maria Desallo (married to Antonio Mea/Mayo)
In Salerno province (Campania region) was Di Salle, Di Salvo etc... but in othe regions of South Italy was Di Sallo surname .. ....
If we can not determine with certainty the spelling of the last name, any idea abt her Birthplace could be wrong... what is strange in this search, that no marriage record in USA and I cannot find the Birth records of children, so by the Maria maiden name written on, it could be more easy to opt for one version of her maiden name....
