advice on where to look now GADDA/ POLETTI

Post by kazzad »

I recently had a lovely member confirm my gggrandfathe'rs deaath record, as well as give me the previous generations names of
Bortolo Poletti and Maddalena Gadda. The translation given is:

Act of Death #21
Dated 16 February 1890 at 11:08 AM at the town office.
Before the official Stefano Moratti... of the town of Villa di Tirano, appeared Pietro Poletti, 61, farmer residing in this town, and Bortolo Poletti, 58, farmer residing in this town, to declare that at 5:16 AM today in the house at Via Compagna [no number], died Giuseppe Poletti , age 70, farmer residing in this town, born in the town to deceased Bortolo [Poletti] farmer who resided in this town, and to deceased Maddalena Gadda, farmer who resided in this town; [he was the] husband of Maria Bassi.
Witnesses to the recording of the act... Paolo Scaletti, 29, farmer, and Domenico Merlo, 46, farmer; both residing in this town.

I have gone through the death records on fsearch index for Villa di Tirano and cannot find either Bortolo or Maddalena from 1866 onwards and certainly NO Gadda surnames. But according to the above they were in Villa di Tirano at least from 1820 for birth of Giuseppe.

Just seeking ideas of where to try and search for records from this point. (NB) Maria and Giuseppe were in Villa di Tirano according to son's Aust Naturalization records in 1864 (birth of Giacomo) and 1869 (birth of Giuseppe), although Maria's Aust death record says born Milan.

Thankyou

According to this death act for Bortolo Poletti-Paletta, 8 year old son of Giuseppe Poletti-Paletta and Maria Bassi, the grandfather [Bortolo] was still alive. Giuseppe is identified as "figlio di Bortolo"
Since this record is from 10 April 1866, there SHOULD be a death act for Bortolo in the records after 1866.

I also searched the death indices for 1866 onward, and while I found some Bortolo Poletti deaths, the wife's name did not match. That being said... we sometimes find that the listing of spouses varies from town to town. Some list all spouses [deceased and living], and others only list the PRESENT spouse.

My recommendation would be to write to the Comune and request a death act for Bortolo. Provide the parameters of possibly years using the other records you have. His death act will also tell you if his wife Maddalena Gadda was alive/deceased when he died.

Once again I owe you many thanks Tessa :) I'm afraid I made the mistake of scrolling through the family search records to the deaths and starting there, discounting early records as being in the marriage section. I notice on the link you sent me that no #27 also has the same names- is it related? Also, was it "normal" for hyphenated names to drop a name and is there any significance in the "Paletta" part of the name? Many thanks

I should also add that Maria Bassi (died Aus) listed her father as "Peter" and I note "Pietro Bassi" amongst the names- although I stress I do not read Italian :(

Good eyes!
Yes, record #27 is the death of another son named Giuseppe who is age 3 years and 6 months. Same parents. Death on 2 April.

Thankyou :) I definitely know that Maria Bassi and Giuseppe Poletti had sons Giacomo b 1864 and Giuseppe (b 1869) as I am direct descendant of Giuseppe and we have multiple records from Aust re both of these men- would it be unusual to name a second child with the name of a previously died child?
