Baiamonte-Cannariato marriage record

Post by jml1991 »

Looking for some assistance with the 1752 marriage record of my 5th great-grandparents, Nicolo Baiamonte and Santa Cannariato. Am I correct in that this is a second marriage for Nicolo? And was his first wife named Rosa? I don't see his parents' names -- are they there? Santa's father is, I think, Francesco, but is her mother's name there? Am I missing anything else? Whatever help anyone could give in translating this record is much appreciated! Thank you!

Yes, Nicolo was a widower; his first wife's name should be Rosa, but I can't read the rest.
Santa's father was Giovanni (deceased), and mother Francesca

Pippo
I see the surname Scoma and then what looks like Nicolini to me-above Rosa's name. I've never seen these two surnames comprising a double surname though.

Erudita,
I read Scoma, but I thought it did not exist as a surname.
I've just checked, and it actually exists.
Then, I'd read Nicolosi rather than Nicolini.

Pippo
Scoma is a surname in my own ancestry, which is why it immediately popped out at me. I also was considering Nicolosi as the second one, but then changed my mind to Nicolini, as I see the ending more as "ni" than "si." I just have never seen these two surnames together in any Sicilian records, and I have worked with Sicilian records in many many towns-not only in ones for my own ancestry. i also searched all over the Internet and can't find any evidence that these two surnames were ever used together. Of course, that doesn't mean they weren't. I'm hoping this Rosa eventually appears in some other record, so that we can be sure about her surname.

Wow, thank you PippoM and Erudita74! Very helpful -- I really appreciate it! I also saw what I thought looked like Scoma, but I have not encountered that surname in the town of Prizzi previously. I have seen the surname Nicolini in reading records from Prizzi, but not Nicolosi. Just a possibility: do you think that maybe they were trying to indicate that Rosa was the daughter of Nicolai, or Nicolo, Scoma? I think I will have to find the marriage record for Nicolo Baiamonte and Rosa to sort this out. Thanks again!

One other question: I don't see Nicolo Baiamonte's parents' names in this record. Are they there and I am just missing them? Or is it not unusual to omit them in favor of showing a late spouse's name? Most records I have seen would have both the parents' and the late spouse's names.

Nicolo's parents' names are not given in the record.

As to the Scoma surname-it is rare, but I have read that it is found in Prizzi. I have never researched in this town though, so I can't say for sure. My own Scoma ancestry was in the town of Menfi in Agrigento Province. No microfilmed church records. Civil records have one direct line Scoma ancestor dying in 1824 at the age of 60 (so born about 1764). His death record indicates that he was born in Menfi. I have his parents' names from that record, but don't know anything else about them. All I do know is that there were no Scoma individuals in the town of Menfi's 1714 census, so the family was definitely from somewhere else. I have yet to figure out where.

Yes, a marriage record for Nicolo and Rosa would be beneficial, if you can find one.

Scoma is a fairly common name in Sciacca, a much bigger place next to Menfi. Nicolosi is common in Agrigento and Palermo provinces, but I don't know about in Prizzi. OTOH, I don't think Nicolini is found there now. Looking at a map of the distribution of surnames in Italy, it seems to be predominantly a northern Italian name. I also don't see a dot for the penultimate "i" if it were Nicolini. I would guess Nicolosi, but I can't rule out that it was giving her father's name, although that would be uncommon. In general, one could see any combination of 2 surnames because sometimes people, especially women, were referred to by both their father's and mother's surnames as a double surname.

In church marriage records, usually if a person had been previously married, the parents names were not indicated. You see either a previous spouse or the parents, but not both. (This is not always true, though. It also depends on the comune.)

Yes, Carubia, Scoma is fairly common in Sciacca, but I've found no evidence of a connection of mine to that town or Sambuca, which another researcher suggested to me a long time ago.

And, yes, as Carubia has indicated, the content in these church records is always dependent upon the comune, or actually the particular priest who wrote the record. Even within a single town, I have found that church records can vary depending on who recorded an event.

Scoma was definitely Rosa's surname. Here's their 1716 marriage record-(top left)

Groom: Nicola Baiamonte, never before married-son of Filippo and deceased Angela

So maybe it was Rosa Scoma Nicolai, indicating her father's given name.

Maybe, since her father was Nicola. Her mother was Antonina Marino. I found their marriage record as well.
