I am reading Martaro as well, but haven't found any evidence of the name in the town. I'm actually wondering whether it should be Martera, which is a name that appears in the town today.

Tessa & Angela
Thank you for your thoughts. I thought it could be Matera, which is very common, but it appears there is 7 letters, not 6. Another addition to the "to be solved" list.

i appreciate your efforts,
donna

You will also find the surname Mortara in the Province of Bari.

Happy to help, Donna. It looks like the records for Foggia have now been digitised, but viewable only at either a Family History Center or Affiliate Library. I'm going to be volunteering at an affiliate library later in the week, so, time permitting, I'll look for the marriage record and check the surname out for you. It seems like there could be a few possibilities. Hopefully I'll be able to download the record for you as well. Will get back to you.

Well let's hope that I find the marriage record and am able to download it. I've noticed that there are still some restrictions on downloading documents at Affiliated Libraries.

Will be in touch.

Hi Donna and Tessa

With much help from the following records, I believe that the name is: "della Martora":

(The name still exists in the town, and possibly if the first part of the name was included in the edited birth record, it would have been much easier to dicipher?) Hope this helps, Donna.

It was a pleasure, Donna. I really admire your dedication and determination - your records can be so challenging at times.

I'm helping out at the library again next week, and if there are any other records you would like me to check, I would gladly do this. Feel free to ask.
