Please help us read the Marriage of Giuseppe Musciotto & Maria Suppa

Post by molan »

Hi, please help us (Paula Musciotto) read a Marriage record from Geraci Siculo. The online record is blocked except at the family history center.

It is the 1836 Marriage of Giuseppe Musciotto & Maria Suppa, #1, 31 Jan 1836

I've attached a copy of the record also.
Thanks
Gary

to add to Livio's translation-

The groom had the consent of both of his parents. Since the bride's parents and paternal grandfather were deceased, and she was a minor, she had the consent of the Family Council dated Dec 11, 1835. Comprising the family council would be relatives such as uncles and cousins, or even grandfathers, if alive. If there were no family members alive, then the council could be made up of neighbors or close friends of the family. The members of the council would convene to discuss the merits or shortcomings of the prospective spouse (was this person worthy of contracting marriage with their relative?; were they of good moral character?; if a woman, did she have a sufficient dowry to bring to the marriage? etc.). If the council members were in agreement and voted yes, then consent was given to the minor, so that the marriage could proceed.

Thank you so very much Livio & Erudita. We so very much appreciate the translation and explanation of what was going on.

May I ask a question ? Does the record indicate what street they each lived on ? Paula wants to go back to the town and visit the residences if possible.

Giuseppe lived in Via San Rocco, and Maria in Via San Michele
The document says Rua Santo Rocco and Rua san Michele. Rua = Via = Street

The word in the document is clearly Rua and not Via. And yes, in Sicilian dialect, Rua, with a grave accent over the u, means strada or via

see p. 369 of the link below

https://books.google.com/books?id=LOtDA ... ua&f=false

I do see via San Rocco on the current map

this should be the correct link to the current street map

Just correcting the spelling of the bride's surname, in case anyone else is researching this family.

Angela :)
