Please help with letter

Post by bvbellomo »

Here is a letter from February 1830 about Vincenzo Ferrara son of the deceased Paolo Ferrara and deceased Carmela Genco (Ienco, Tenco?) of Palermo, who is marrying Rosa Mazzola, daughter of Santo Mazzola and Maria Sciacchiano. Paolo's profession is listed, it could be 'Servente'? It looks to be signed by 3 town officials approving the marriage who aren't related to anyone involved, as well Gaetana Genco, sister of the groom's mother, Francesco Onorato, friend of someone, and someone named Damino. Santo's professsion is given as 'tintore'.

Can anyone else read anything that might be of interest in this letter?

This is not a letter. It is a family council document. The groom was age 18, a minor, and his parents were deceased, as was his paternal grandfather. So none of these individuals was available to give their consent to his marriage to Rosa. So the first three individuals listed were acquaintances and friends on his deceased father's side. The next three were on his mother's side. The first person was the sister of his deceased mother, as you have noted. The other two were friends-not sure if they were friends of other relatives. The phrase "di fatto" can mean "common law." Deceased Paolo's profession was scribente-he was employed to copy documents-or was a clerk. Tintore was someone who dyed fabrics, etc.

Anyway, the members of the council would convene to determine if Rosa was worthy of marrying Vincenzo. They would consider things like whether or not she was of good moral character, did she have a sufficient dowry to bring to the marriage. If they were in consensus, then they would give their consent for the minor to contract marriage.

wow, thanks!

The 3 names listed as his father's friends are connected. One is the brother of the Barone dell'Avanella, who lived in nearby Petralia Soprano, but died 2 years earlier. The other two married his daughters. I was wondering why such high nobility would sign this document as officials, and now you tell me they knew his father!

The 3 names for the groom's mother's side, the first is his aunt, Gaetana Genco, a 50 year old widow. The 2nd is Francesco Norato, a 30 year old never married who married Gaetana a few months later! I believe Francesco's mother is Rosa's great-aunt - both were from Castelbuono and so was Francesco. The 3rd name (Octtavia Damino) also moved here from Palermo, but doesn't seem to have any other connections.

I'd love to find the connection between people from so far away and such different classes.

Do you know if the groom's mother's name is Genco, with a 'G'? Various other people have transcribed this as Tenco, Ienco, Jenco, etc.

Do you know if a 'Tintore' could also be a 'Zimatore'? I.e, the same person who dyed cloth cut it? In this document, it is clearly 'Tintore' but in others it is not so clear but almost certainly a 'Z'.
