Marriage Certificate Translation help

Post by turtlewax »

I have been researching my husbands side of the family (his mother hails from Italians and Sicilians who emigrated to America in the turn of the century).

some of my husband side of the family that came form Voltapino Italy I am unable to find much information on. I recently discovered a document for a marriage from one of the relatives that has caused me to have a bit of brick wall in my search. We are unsure of the spelling of Adelina's Maiden name because every document in america spells her last name differently. I have not found many documents with her maiden name from Italy. She married a man by the name of Pietro Zurla and then moved to America around 1905-ish. I took one semester of Italian in College and it really doesn't help me read this document well. https://i.imgur.com/QayRtMY.jpg

I am also trying to translate this document for his mothers paternal side of Angelo Sciandra (his marriage to Carmela Lanza) from Sicily. https://i.imgur.com/SIvK8YQ.jpg

Thank you in advance. The lovely people on the genealogy subreddit sent me here to try.

Adele's surname is Seccafieno (found in Valtopina)

The marriage took place on 12 December 1903 in Valtopina
Pietro Zurla was age 29, a laborer, born and residing in the town; son of Andrea [Zurla] and Annunziata(?) Panzini
Adele Seccafieno was age 24, a farmer, born and residing in the town; daughter of deceased Filippo [Seccafieno] and of deceased Antonia Rosati.

The second marriage document:
Marriage on 19 February 1887 in Montedoro
Angelo was age 28, farmer, son of deceased Giuseppe and of deceased Giuseppa Puma
Carmela was age 20, weaver, daughter of deceased Salvatore and of living Anna Baiera

Well, we know from the marriage record above that Adele Seccafieno was born about 1879 in Valtopina to Filippo Seccafieno and to Antonia Rosati (her parents).

Unfortunately, there appear to be many years missing among the digitized records. You will need to write directly to the Comune of Valtopina to request Adele's birth act. Let me know if you need the address, and help with a letter of request in Italian.

Did Adele Seccafieno die in Valtopina?

Adelina Seccafiena Died in Hilldale Pennsylvania, USA 8 October 1961 per the information from my husbands Grandmother. I do not have a death cert to verify But I do trust the information.

Edit I would love to write to the area and get a copy of that information. I have yet to do this in my Geneaology Research.

One of my husbands aunts had started this research and I have been using her notes to fill in the tree and and then try and find supporting documents. Unfortunately this aunt is no longer around.

I have Angelos Sciandras Parents as Andrew Sciandra and PAsqualina. I have nothing on Pasqualina so I am unsure if that is correct. For Andrew I also have no information. The names I could have might very well be wrong since this document says the names of his parents are Giuseppe Sciandra and Giuseppa Puma.

The information I have for his wife Carmela Lanza Matches what you translated in this document.

When you write to the Comune of Valtopina, you should write in Italian (help with letter below), and send your photo ID and an email address. Send no money with your letter. You will be contacted should they need you to cover the cost of copying and mailing you the document. Sometimes they can email it.

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Via Nazario Sauro, 34
06030 Valtopina (PG)

As to the names of Angelo's parents... the marriage act you posted above, which I translated, has the correct names for his parents. Many times in a family, incorrect information is passed down. Sort of like playing a game of "telephone" :-)

BUT--- in his death act, Giuseppe Sciandra is listed as "a widower in the second marriage to Giuseppa Puma."
So it is POSSIBLE that Angelo's mother had the first name Pasqualina. It would seem unlikely, however, that his marriage act would have the incorrect name. He would have had to present his birth act to the official. The official listed his mother as Giuseppa Puma.

Death act #91 of Giuseppe Sciandra in 1885
Giuseppe Sciandra was age 76, the son of deceased Vincenzo Sciandra and of deceased Grazia Macaluso.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=1946840

AND here is the death act (#14) of Giuseppa Puma in 1880
She was age 48, and the wife of Giuseppe Sciandra.

Calogera Sciandra was one year of age when she died. Her parents were Angelo Sciandra and Giuseppa Campanella.

You would have to research the families to see if they are related.
