Hello All,
I am so glad to have stumbled upon this forum.
I am an Australian citizen looking into the possibility of being granted Italian citizenship through the maternal side of my family. I realise that the 1948 would be applicable to this case but l am looking for information as to whether l would be eligible for citizenship via jure sanguinis in the first instance. I would appreciate your assistance please.
It's a little complicated...here goes;
Maternal Great Grandfather - Born in Italy - Migrated to Egypt before 1910
Maternal Great Grandmother - Born in Italy - Married my MGG by proxy - Migrated to Egypt before 1910
Maternal Grandmother - Born in Egypt 1910 - when she was born l am 99% sure she had Italian citizenship and possibly renounced it after my mother was born.
My Mother - Born in Egypt 1946 (Egyptian Citizenship) - 1966 onward Australian Citizenship
Me - Australian Citizenship
I am not sure where l would even begin my search for documentation. And, l think it will be very difficult to locate documents in Egypt as l do not read or speak the language. Also, the years of birth are unknown for my great grandparents.I am only certain about my MGG coming from Trani commune.
If l am eligible but this is a 1948 case then l would be looking into hiring a lawyer. Does anyone know what type of cost is involved with this. I read somewhere 4000 Euro?
I look forward to your replies.

Thanks for your time in advance!
Eligibility for citizenship jure sanguinis via maternal side
Re: Eligibility for citizenship jure sanguinis via maternal side
Unfortunately, you will need to determine if and when any naturalizations took place in Egypt. First, the easy question: Did your mother naturalize in Australia before you were born?

Thank you for your response mler.
My maternal grandfather was an Egyptian citizen. My mother was born an Egyptian citizen and has never had Italian citizenship. When she came to Australia she became an Australian citizen.
My maternal grandmother was the person in our lineage that was naturalised (Italian citizenship) in Egypt years after my mother was born.Would you know where people look for naturalization records?

I understand. However, since your mother was born in Egypt and became an Australian citizen, she must have naturalized at some point. I ask about her because hers is the easiest record to find, and if she naturalized in Australia before you were born that would have ended any Italian citizenship she may have had.
So start with her. If she did not naturalize before your birth, you can then begin thinking of Egypt.
