Death act - Giacomina Colangelo n. 80
Hi Guys,
Have you seen anything like this before? Does this mean she was born to a single mother?

Hi Julie
It does appear that she was the daughter of an unwed mother.

I got pretty excited about this, but I'm in the process of putting all the information that I've gathered together.
I have come across a Birth act for Maria Colangelo in 1816 She has the same mother, but there is also a father mentioned. They have the same last name. I'm going to have to go through my marriage information.

Oh never mind. I misread and Leonardo is not the father.
Strange.

Re: Death act - Giacomina Colangelo n. 80
Some thoughts on the subject-her occupation is not given in any of these records. If she was a peasant, anyone in the fields could have impregnated her. If she worked on a large estate for a nobleman or some other rich person, such as a doctor or lawyer, even in the capacity of a maid, that person could have been the father. The father may or may not have been the same person for the different births. He may have already been married, or even been a local priest, as it was not unheard of that local priests kept mistresses and fathered children. If any of the above possibilities were true, and the father chose not to come forward to admit his paternity, then his identity would not have been revealed in the records. I've read that in Protestant countries, however, this was not the case. The natural father was identified and bore responsibility for the upbringing of the child, in financial and other aspects.

A question for you about the phrase "di fresco nata." In English, would that translate to "newly or recently born," or does it mean that the infant was born outside, in the cool air?
Thanks.

I love that expression. I think it just means newborn. I can ask someone in my family whose native language is Italian and get back to you.

I'd say "recently" or "just" born.

Thanks, Pippo. I haven't seen any of my family online and there is a 9 hour time difference, so I haven't had a chance to ask.
May I ask you, where did you learn English?

Is it so bad??

I had a good teacher when I was at school (so long ago); when I went to University, most of the books were in English (very technical, indeed).
Then, when Internet age came, I started writing in Forums, so I think I improved it somehow.

Pippo,
The reason I asked about your English is because I know you're Italian and I know you live in Italy. I was wondering if you had spent some time abroad. Your English is very good and I'm impressed that you learned this much just from school.
Anyway, thanks for your help. It's always a pleasure to get your insight.
