Anything Unusual Here?
For record number 55 - birth of Sebastiano Liustro - is he the legitimate son of a married couple? I see the note in the margin, as well as some

Re: Anything Unusual Here?
This is what I'm understanding - the record is somewhat blurry.
The surname is Liistro
The birth was declared by Alfio Liistro, 26yo, contadino, living in Melilli. He reported that at 9 am on 22 February 1901, in the house in Via Costanza, No 5, a baby was born from his natural union with Carmela Limmetti?, who he was not married to. She was a casalinga (domestic) living in Melilli, and (he) appeared here to make the present declaration, and presented the baby, who was given the name Sebastiano, to the official.
The annotation is announcing that Sebastiano Liistro was legitimised by Alfio Liistro and Carmela Limmetti? at their subsequent marriage which was celebrated on the 26 February 1901 (so the same day that the baby's birth was registered?), and was written into the marriage register of this town – Act No 11.
Are you able to link me to the online record please. Thanks. I just want to check Carmela's surname.
(The reason I'm having issues with deciphering Carmela's surname, is because when I zoom in on the record, the image blurrs. It would be really helpful, if in future, you link us to the online. Ta.

Re: Anything Unusual Here?
Thanks. I figured something was going on. I just found out the baby died. They had another one with the same name two years later. They immigrated to the U.S. but their subsequent history is fuzzy. The surname of the mother is Zimmitti. Is the name Filomena ever used for a woman named Carmela?

There are many examples of women who immigrated to the USA changing their given name, often to one not related to their birth name. She may have just liked the name Filomena better.
Here is the marriage act of Aflio and Carmela which is referenced in the birth act for Sebastiano.
It states that Carmela Zimmitti was a widow.
