Familiar with Latin-Italian church records?

Post by meovino »

Is anyone familiar with Latin-Italian church records?
Shown here is a church marriage record in Giuliana, Sicily from... a very long time ago.

This is the marriage between Giuseppe Principato and Beatrice Occhipinti. It appears that Beatrice's parents are Cesar and [Leo]narda. However, I can't seem to make out Giuseppe's parents and I'm not really sure if it even lists them. I can't seem to make anything out after Giuseppe's name. Was this normal for them to only list bride's parents or am I missing something?

Thanks.

Could you please copy and paste the url from the top of the page on which you found this document? That's the only way we can determine the exact date of the marriage. I can only tell that the month was October. Thanks.

The groom's father's name ? The groom's mother's first name looks like Silvestra. Narda was a common abbreviation used in some of the church records in Sicily for the first name Leonarda.

Here is the link to the record, right page towards the bottom. Appears that the date is October 6, 1585.

Still having trouble making out the grooms parents. Silvestra looks correct. Maybe the groom's father is written above that? It looks it could be "Pho" which it usually short for "Filippo".

Thanks for the help.

I initially thought the groom's father could be Filippo and then deleted that info from my reply, as I wasn't positive. Hopefully you'll find another record which can confirm this info. I also think it odd the way the dates are written on these records.

It certainly is. It's defintely amazing to see how things were done over 400 years ago though. Thank you very much for your help!

Also, I have one more instance here:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2046915

Very top of the right page, the marriage of Antonino D'Alessandro(?) and Perna T/Lavanella. In this case especially, it appears that it only lists the the bride's parents names of Pietro and Antonella.

It also appears that the groom was from a different, neighboring town (Sambuca di Sicilia); maybe this was why.
Please let me know if I'm missing anything here, thanks again!

Your are correct. Only the bride's parents are mentioned in the record and, yes, the groom was from Sambuca. Don't assume, however, that because an individual was from another town but living in the town in which you are researching records that the person's parents are not mentioned in the church record. The problem with church records was that there was no required format for them, so their content was at the discretion of the individual priest or his clerk who entered the info into the parish record books.

That makes sense. Thank you very much for your input!
