Yes, Marsala was a walled city. It had three large entrance gates, Porta Mare, Porta Nuova, and Porta Mazara, and a small one, Porticella, that faced Trapani. The Mazara gate faces southeast, toward the nearby city of Mazara del Vallo. The walls and the Mazara and Porticella gates have been torn down for expansion in the 20th century, but the Mare (now Garibaldi) and Nuova gates remain. The residence would have been outside the Mazara gate. My relatives live just a few miles down that road in Mazara del Vallo.
