Re: Matteo LuFrano 1836-1913
Pippo,
Thank you for your help. I found this as well, but I dismissed it because he actually would have been 56 not 54, after further study that he had two children besides Luggia; Mary and Filomena. Filomena appears to be traveling with Matteo but Filomena was married in Italy to John Salamone. Filomena would have been married by the time of this entry, she was married in 1887, her and John Salmone had one child born in Italy Carmino in 1888 which makes the age and name of the child traveling with Filomena LuFrano the same. Would she be traveling without her husband and using her maiden name? Could the child also be using the name Lufrano instead of Salmon?

Re: Matteo LuFrano 1836-1913
The difference between him being 54/56 is irrelevant, ages vary a lot for immigrants. +/- 5 years is common. Filomena uses her maiden name because all Italian women kept their maiden name after marriage, only changing it in the states typically. The fact that Carmine also has her name could be an oversight by the recorder. She gave her full name and then the name of her child so it was likely assumed that the child had the same surname when really it should be the surname of the father.

Re: Matteo LuFrano 1836-1913
Yes, the accuracy of ages is questionable in these documents.
The spelling of surnames is often based on the phonetic spelling of an Italian pronunciation the census taker hears.
Here is a 1915 US Census for the family of Pasquale Desimone - written as Patsy Desmo in the record.
Residing on Salina St. in Utica, NY.
His wife is Lewisa
Listed last is his mother-in-law - Mary Chetta (this is most likely Mariantonia Lufrano)
Could this be the phonetic of Citra'?
Age here is also several years off.

Re: Matteo LuFrano 1836-1913
Ahhhh... I did not know that Italian women kept their maiden names. Then this could very well be Matteo traveling with his daughter and grandchild. Thank you Pippo
Re: Matteo LuFrano 1836-1913
Thank you Tessa88, I have these records as well, it has been difficult to find out where in Italy Matteo and his family resided before immigrating to USA. This site is wonderful and I am grateful for all the help that you and others provide.
Re: Matteo LuFrano 1836-1913
Unfortunately, those early manifests do not give the last place of residence, which often is the place of birth for the passenger.
According to the 1915 US Census, Pasquale Desimone was a naturalized citizen...
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/co ... Id=4020486
which is confirmed by the application for his US Passport in 1922.
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/co ... pId=144244
If you can find the naturalization record, and if he was married at the time, it should list his wife (Luisa/Luigia) and HER date and place of birth.
Note: Pasquale stated that he was naturalized before the County Court of Oneida in Utica, NY.
You could try to locate the record there.
That is a fantastic photo of Pasquale on page 2 of his passport application

I'm posting a few records that you might already have, but it's just for everyone to know:

This might be Filomena's family in Utica in 1900.

The surname is Accetta.
This is probably the surname that was written as Chetta on the 1915 US Census.

Thank you, this information is a tremendous help.
Is it transcription error or handwriting that causes the two different spellings Rufrano and Lufrano?
