Contacting Family Tree Owners on Ancestry.com
Do you have to have a paid account with Ancestry.com in order to contact owners of family trees, etc?

I'm not a subscriber, but I'm pretty sure you need a paid subscription in order to be able to do so.

Yes. However, if a paid subscriber contacts you, then you can reply back to them even though you are an unpaid subscriber.

You definitely have to have a subscription.

Even if you join, good luck getting a reply to your messages. I have sent 30 messages to DNA matches (4th cousins or closer). Only three responses were of any significant value. 13 received no response at all, an additional 5 responses were of no value whatsoever, and the rest were, at best, marginally interesting, but ultimately fruitless.
I wish you better luck.

I agree with Greg - about half of my messages to people on Ancestry go unanswered. I'm guessing a lot of them received their DNA tests as birthday or Christmas presents, and really didn't care about the test results.

I'm asking about those who have uploaded family trees onto Ancestry.com.
They must have some level of interest in ancestry.

Seriously, I have contacted people with hundreds, even thousands of entries built out on their family tree, and have received zero, zip, nada, in return from the great majority of them.
