Centonze / DiGregorio ?

Post by mikez »

Both from Sicily, as far as i know. There are certainly quite a few still living there and Bari as well. Its been difficult to trace and kind of lineage on either :(

If anyone happens to know any info, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :D

Hi & welcome to the forum,

To be able to help, can you tell us the following?

What your research goals? Are you looking for records in US and/or Italy?

1st names? Ages? Arrival in US? Any children names and year of birth?....to help identify a family.

Where they settled in the US?

What US documents do you have already?

I don't know if this helps, but my grandmother was a DiGregorio and was born in San Angelo in Formis in 1884.Her father was Guiseppe.Records for this area are often found in nearby Capua.San Angelo is in the province of Napoli. She had brothers Giovanni and Vincenzo and sisters Angelina ,Theresa and I believe ,Mary who unlike the others never came to America.Grandma came to America in 1907. Good Luck.

thanks for the info so far.

I'm not seeking and documents per se. my investigations are mainly out of curiosity. I would like to make a trip to sicily within the next year or so and possibly meet up w/ some relatives. after my grandparents passed away, there was no contact with relatives there. I feel that is is important to educate myself and fam about where we came from as well as who we came from. Its a bit strange to know so little bout one's own family and i'd like to remedy that.

forgive my long winded response, heres the info i have...

Centonze - Katie and Guiseppe lived in Bari before coming to NJ in about 1922, on the way Guiseppe jr. was born in Napoli. there are still several centonzes in Bari i believe. Other children born in the US are James and Euphemia. I know Centonze is apparently a small town in Trapani bvut i dont know of any relatives there.

DiGregorio - Archangelo was a policeman, or the equivalent, in Palermo around 1910 shortly after he moved to NJ with his 1st wife, my great grandmother. I'm not sure which or any of thier 8 children were born there, possibly Angelo, John or Charles. (Grace, Anna, Angela, Mary and guiseppe were all born here)

here is where it gets interesting, Archangelo had another wife who stayed in Sicily. we dont know anything about her or her family besides her being a seamstress/ dressmaker. we dont know if they had any children. He'd visit Palermo every few months and bring back dresses for his daughters and granddaughters.

i guess i'd just want to know a public listing of who and where these people are right now. nothing invasive. i'd just want to drop a letter or two.

I found this 1930 census very interesting, because everything matches the info you gave on your CENTONZE family except 1st name not Jospeh (Giuseppe) but Michele & no daughter.

1930 Jersey City, Hudson, NJ
Centonze, Michele-Head-34-Italy-immig 1922-NA-married @28-occu:ice creme dealer?
Katie-wife-30-Italy-immig 1922-NA
Joseph-son-7-Italy
James-son-4-NJ

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/8508/centonze19306sp

Based on the census information, I located their ship manifest

Michele Centonze, age 25, married
DOA:11/8/1922
POD:Naples
POA:NY
Ship of travel: Colombo

Traveling with him is wife, Chiara, age 23 & son, Giuseppe, age 2. They are going to f-i-l/fathe/g.father, Giuseppe Carone, @ 91 Hudson Ave., Union Hill, NJ. Michele, Chiara, & Giuseppe born in Altamura, Italy & Michele's nearest relative in Italy is father, Giuseppe. in Altamura.
