Re: Ideas on the location?
Hi Nick - unless I'm mistaken, the steamship was the Caprera? That was an Italian passenger ship; there are a few brief records of its voyages in the 1920s, like this one in 1922:
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... nge&page=1
Also, is the passenger's last name "Cancellieri"? This map shows that surname appears across the peninsula, with a small concentration in Genoa:

Here is the December 9, 1926 voyage of the steamship Caprera to Brisbane, Australia. Passenger #7 is "Pietro Cancellier":

The voyage originated in Genoa.

Re: Ideas on the location?
Thanks, but all that was pretty clear....what the guy I was hoping to help was drawing a blank on was where Pietro was from...I couldn't help him at all
Ereraio ? .... I don't understand that first letter & I can't find anything that seems to fit.
I'm assuming that since the outbound port was Genoa that this is a central to north location.
I appreciate you taking a look!

My opinion... written by another hand that the rest of the passport, AND very poor script for Genova.NickAndreola wrote: 25 Aug 2021, 18:44 Thanks, but all that was pretty clear....what the guy I was hoping to help was drawing a blank on was where Pietro was from...I couldn't help him at all![]()

In the region of LIguria, the surname is found only in Genoa, and even there it is not numerous.

Re: Ideas on the location?
Hi Nick - I don't think there is a letter "I" in the city name. The mark below the word "anni" looks like a tear in the paper rather than the dot above an "i." I went to this page:
http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... arch]=name
I entered Giuseppe for "Nome" and Cancellieri for "Cognome." Leaving everything else blank, I got 403 results. When I chose "Nascite" for "Tipologia di Atto," 1860 for "Anno Inizio" and 1885 for "Anno Fine," I got 94 results. This kind of fishing might get you useable results.

Re: Ideas on the location?
I agree with Nick. I don't see the letter "i" there either. This is somewhat off-beat but I'm wondering whether the town might be Erbusco, Brescia? Otherwise, it seems like it must be a little village somewhere in the south.

Thanks for all the insight Y'all! Yeah, I got fixated on there being an i in the word
He's found another record "Update - Page 40 of his "Enemy Alien" file shows birth as "Modono" maybe Modena."
I thrashed around with that a bit
---Did NOT find a birth in June 1905 or 1904 in the city of Modena
---Did NOT find a birth or the surname Cancellieri in the commune in Modena that I thought might be what's written on the document..... Fanano .....http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... +italiano/
I appreciate the y'all's time but think this one might have to wait on more clarity before continuing!

Re: Ideas on the location?
Hi Nick - If you look at the current distribution of the surname "Cancellieri" (depicted in the following link) you can see a large triangular cluster of comuni about 2/3 of the way up the Adriatic coast:
http://www.gens.info/italia/it/turismo- ... Sexty1h1qv
The three corners of the triangle are roughly located at Rimini, Sansepolcro and Fano. This area encompasses most of the Province of Pesaro and Urbino. On the following page of Antenati, I entered Giuseppe Cancellieri's name and 1855-to-1888 as the probable span of years during which he was born:
http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... arch]=name
This search yielded 114 results, each result consisting of a child and his two parents among whom the names "Giuseppe" and "Cancellieri" appeared. Of those 114 results, 59 were located in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, and included town names like Apecchio, Piobbico, and Montegrimano. And of those 59, 16 were for specifically for children named Giuseppe Cancellieri. The results also include the names of the child's parents. Do you know the names of Giuseppe's parents?
I hope you realize my experiment is based on statistics and doesn't guarantee your Pietro or his father, Giuseppe, were born in Pesaro and Urbino!

Re: Ideas on the location?
I hope I'm not getting too far off here, but on this record of foreigners and German persecutees is Pietro Cancelleri, who is listed as from Madera. There are a couple of others on the page listed as from there, but also a couple listed as from Matera. Matera is a good size town in the region of Basilicata, and I'm guessing that those listed as from Madera are from Matera. The surname definitely appears there. https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/co ... Id=5374490NickAndreola wrote: 26 Aug 2021, 15:20 Thanks for all the insight Y'all! Re: Ideas on the location?
In Matera was born on 7 jul 1905 a Pietro Vincenzo Cancelliere (no Cancellieri) but son of Biagio and of Maria Rosaria Moliterni, married in Matera on 1929 to Nunzia Di Marzio...

This is no the Pietro Cancellieri that we are searching for... the nametown is unreadable on the picture posted... hoping to see the pag 40 of his enemy alien

Re: Ideas on the location?
@suanj...."can post the page 40?"....this is the problem with sites that require pay...I don't have an account and was relying only on what was shared with me......
@ bbivona....Thank you for clarifying! So some narrowing of the field.....which is ALWAYS the goal
I know my ancestors from Casalvecchio di Puglia very often reported being from Foggia on immi/emi documents...so this Pietro may be from the town of Matera or from that 'state'......I look at this list of communes there http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... aurazione/ but nothing really jumps out at me as a reasonable match for what is shown on the image linked in the original post.........Anybody see something?
After this post, I will try to scan the Matera town births to see if anything hits....you got there before me suanj

Re: Ideas on the location?
No, not my ancestor....I belong to another genealogy website and try to help others there with all the things that you and all the other wonderful people here have taught me (which I'll be forever grateful for!).....If It is beyond my abilities, I either send them here or post the question for them so they can get the REAL experts on the job.
Maybe bbivona can do the screenshot?---I don't have a pay account at ancestry....
I also went through some Matera births--with no hits.
From your link, the indexes for:
1903 on page 1366
1904 pg 1622
1905 pg 1893
1906 pg 2132
1907 pg 2390
He may be from one of the other towns is the state of Matera....but?
