Marriage of Pietro Monopoli and Donata Sasso

Post by ameb10 »

Hello—
I am struggling with reading this, especially the parents’ names of the individuals getting married here (Pietro Monopoli and Donata Sasso):

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 1.jpg.html

Is there anyone would would be willing to help me translate this? I think Pietro’s parents are “Pietro” and “Giulia”. I think I can make out “Gaetano” and “Angela” for Donata’s parents. Are Pietro and Donata’s birth dates on this as well? I have been trying to find that out too.

Also, I have tried searching Antenati and Family Search’s scans but I haven’t had much luck doing that either— does anyone have any tips for that as well? I have tried watching YouTube videos but I just get more confused.

Thank you!

Dated 3 September 1887 in Bisceglie
Before the official ...personally appeared:
1 - Pietro Monopoli, 25, mason, born in Bisceglie, residing in said comune, son of deceased Pietro who resided in Bisceglie, and of deceased Giulia Quercia who resided in Bisceglie;
2 - Donata Sasso, 18, seamstress, born in Bisceglie, residing in said comune, daughter of Gaetano residing in Bisceglie, and of Angela La Veca residing in Bisceglie.
(Then it is the legal language of the marriage with the official asking if each takes the other for spouse)
To this act were present: Antonio Petruzzelli, 44, dyer, and Emmanuele Bruni, 45, caretaker/keeper of the prison.
Documents provided ~certificate of publication of banns of marriage on 14 and 21 August of the current year
At the said marriage were present to give consent the parents of the bride.
The groom and bride signed along with the witnesses and the official.

Here is the publication of Banns - It gives the birth dates of the spouses.
Pietro Monopoli - born 9 February 1862
Donata Sasso - born 1 October 1869

Wow! Thank you so much, I have a few questions but I’m not sure if you will know the answers.
For the Italian naming patterns, I thought there was a rule where the children were named after the grandparents, not the parents. I was under the assumption the parents could not name their children after themselves (example: Pietro Monopoli Sr. and Pietro Monopoli Jr.), is that true? That is what it looks like in this case.
Also, who are the witnesses normally (Antonio Petruzzelli, 44, dyer, and Emmanuele Bruni, 45, caretaker/keeper of the prison)? Are they family friends, just people who happened to be present, or people that were working for the Offical?
Thank you again!

The naming of Italian children follows a tradition, not a rule.
The first born son named after the paternal grandfather, second son after maternal grandfather; first daughter after paternal grandmother, second after the maternal grandmother, was the tradition. It was not a requirement.

Pietro was a 50yo widower when he married Giulia Quercia, so it is possible that he had already followed that tradition and now wanted to name this son after himself, which was his right.

Here is the marriage of Pietro and Giulia. His father was deceased Natale, and her father was Sergio.

As to the wiitnesses on the birth act...these were usually of no relation and just happened to be at the town hall when the presentation of the child was made.

Thank you so much, wow, I am learning a lot. How would I go about finding more documents on Antenati? You seem to find these fast so I was wondering if there was some type of tool you used to sort through the photos. I have tried to use Antenati to sort through Bisceglie records but it has taken me months to find the information I have been looking for. You are beyond helpful, thank you again.

Happy to help! :-)

The volunteers here have been doing searches for a long time. That experience contributes to the efficiency of finding records. We can help you find more documents if you wish. Just post the information you need and someone will help.
We are not always successful, but we do our best.

You might want to familiarize yourself with the Italian Records. Here are some valuable resources:

This online source helps with reading the script, and with the format of the records:
