Can someone (please) tell me the intent of the word "pompe" in the following sentence?
"Ma non saprei mai consigliar altra gente a credere a tutte le belle pompe fatte dagli Agenti d’emigrazione e venire così lontano con la speranza di far fortuna."
The sentence was spoken in 1893 by an Italian who had emigrated to Chile. In this context, is "pompe" equivalent to "persuasions" "or "assertions"?
Thank you in advance...

I think the best word might be "exaggerations", but I believe you're on the right track...joetucciarone wrote: 13 Jan 2022, 18:05 Can someone (please) tell me the intent of the word "pompe" in the following sentence?

Re: meaning of "pompe"
I suspect he's describing the agent as being stately or showy, as in the English cognate "pomp" (and circumstance).
Not necessarily "pompous" or vain display, but ostentatious.
On the other hand, do you think he might be subtly conveying some "pomp" in the negative sense?
Or, maybe he's referring to women's shoes (pumps).

Re: meaning of "pompe"
Thanks to both of you for your thoughts on this. Google translated "pompe" as "pumps," which made no sense in the context of the emigrant's statements. The man also said the company that promoted the trip from Italy to Chile made extravagant claims about life in Chile. So, your "ostentatious" and Mark's "exaggerations" both work much better than Google's "pumps" in the sentence. Thanks again.
