dual citizenship question

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

dual citizenship question

Post by GaryGuarino »

I've read many posts about dual citizenship, and I'm still confused.

My ggf was born in Italy (1884). He migrated from Sicily to the US in 1908, but didn't naturalize in the US until 1924. In 1914, he bore my gf in the US (both ggf and ggm were Italian citizens living in the US when my gf was born). I believe that makes my gf and his male child (my father) an Italian citizen right? Am I not also (by ancestry) able to claim dual citizenship (assuming none of my ggf, gf, or father renounced their Italian citizenship)?

Do I qualify? Thanks for commenting!

Great! Thanks for responding. I'm assuming that I'll need copies of birth certificates, and naturalization paperwork for my ggf. Do I need certified copies and/or other specialized documentation, and who do I work with once I have that paperwork? Is this done via a consulate, or do I need to work with some other organization before filing?

You should present your application to the Italian consulate competent for the town of your residence. So first look at the website of that consulate, you should find detailed instructions about the documents needed (there may be small differences between the various consulates, particularly for the translations).
