any thoughts as to what a 'Maestro di Strada" is / does?

It's possible it could translate as 'roadmaster', which is a railroad manager.

You may be right.

I was taking "di strada" figuratively as a way or method (of teaching).

He was age 26 and his father was a farm owner or manager. Maybe too young to be a teacher? Maybe "roadmaster" makes more sense? I'd look for other records where his occupation is recorded, especially self-reported.

My first thought was a street musician!

If he was a teacher would he'd be addressed by an honorific title like "Don" or "Maestro" in civil records?
