Need Help searching for Marriage Record Cascio/Canatella, Salaparuta, Trapani, Sicily

Post by ccash »

Hello!

Looking for help finding a marriage record for Giuseppe Cascio (b. 1856, Salaparuta to Vito Cascio/Mattia Mandina) and Antonina (Lena) Canatella (b. 1863, Salaparuta to Antonio or Giuseppe Canatella and Vincenza di Benedetto).

On Antenati, I found an 1883 marraige record for Giuseppe Cascio, but it is to Catarina Canatella (might be sister of Antonina, I also found an 1865 atto di nascita for her). Maybe he was widowed and remarried Lena? Maybe this is an error? Could be the wrong Giuseppe? I'm genuinely confused on this one.

They had a daughter in 1886, Mattia Cascio, b. 11 March 1886 in Salaparuta (I found the atto di nascita and the parents are listed as Giuseppe and Antonina) - so I'm assuming they had to be married before her birth?

I have looked through all the marriage records on Antenati between 1875-1887 (immigration year) and can not find a marriage for my great-grandparents - Giuseppe Cascio and Antonina Canatella.

I'm stuck! Please help :) Thank you in advance for any advice or help you can offer... :D

For reference... here is the birth act of Mattia.

Yes, Antonina is identified as his wife (sua moglie)

Just saw your earlier message, thank you for confirming that they were married.

Any advice on how to confirm/find marriage? The 1883 atti di matrimonia names a Catarina Cannatella. Are there other records I should be searchlng?

Many thanks again for your help!!

I searched extensively and found no other.

You say you found a birth act for Caterina...but you do not say that you found one for Antonina.

Perhaps they are the same person?

I found a birth record for Antonina but not a marriage. It is strange. Thank you for searching and for your help! I am very appreciative :)

Happy to help!

Can you post the link to the birth of Antonina, please?
I have not been able to find it. Perhaps it holds another clue.

This is Antonina’s birth act.
She was born on 31 July 1863 in Salaparuta.
Parents were Giuseppe Cannatella and Vincenza Di Benedetto.

And this is the one for Caterina born on 9 September 1865.
Same parents.

Thanks! These are the same two records I found, so I am confident they are sisters.

I am stuck on the 1883 marraige act having Giuseppe and Catarina's names, but Mattia being born to Antonina and Giuseppe. Not finding a marriage act for Giuseppe and Antonina, so I am not sure what happened.

The Antonina/Giuseppe marriage act is the only document I am missing for my jure sanguinis documentation. :(

Thank you for posting the birth acts.

It is strange that you have not found a marriage for Antonina...
but errors with names are not unusual in these records.

You say that the family immigrated in about 1887?
Do you have any record of that?

Where did they settle?
Other children's names?

Agreed! I think it is an error, so leaning into the other documents as support.

I have the ship manifest with Giuseppe, Antonina, and Mattia 1887 SS Nantes - Bordeaux to New Orleans - sorry not able to post it right now because I'm traveling

Other children were all born in Louisiana (Vito, Anthony, Joseph Jr (my grandpa), and Virginie (Jenny) Cascio (Cash). They lived in Plaquemines Parish the rest of their lives and are buried in New Orleans.

I was hoping to check the allegat (attachments) to the marriage. These are the documents provided by the spouses at the time of marriage. It will include their birth acts, banns, etc.

Unfortunately, the allegati for marriages in 1883 are not digitized...
However, they are available to view on microfilm at you nearest Family History Center. You will need to order to have them sent to the center.
Film information listed here.

Hmmm. Perhaps not an error.
Here is the request to publish banns...Publication - for the 1883 marriage.
It states that Vincenza di Benedetto was present to give her legal consent for her daughter to marry. (Caterina)

Hope this helps.

Interesting...

Here is the Atti di Matrimomio, so consistent that it is Catarina...

The allegati di matrimonio 1883 are present after all.
They were in a different registro.
Also present is the death of Caterina’s father and his name was Giuseppe Antonino.
Died on 17 January 1880.

Thanks for clarification on the father's name, I've seen both Giuseppe and Anthony

Is it possible that Catarina is Antonina's middle name?
