Servagne Family

Post by RyanW2025 »

Hello,

This is such an amazing web site. I'm excited to keep learning more ways to discover my Italian ancestry through reading all these posts. It's amazing.

In the meantime, I'm stumped on another family member that I'm hoping someone may be able to help provide me with some direction to find more answers or has already found answers.

My Great-Step-Grandfather was, Joe Servagno. However, his birth name was Giuseppe Calfo Servagne. He was born on April 17th, 1894 in Complenti, Italy.

He married his first wife, Caterina Caligiure, on November 30th, 1919, in Pedivigiliano, Italy. The two had one child, a son, Bernardo in September 1920 in Pedivigiliano, Italy.

According to immigration documentation, Joe arrived on May 2, 1920 in New York City via Naples.

Based on records I've found, in May of 1972, Joe officially divorced Caterina Caligiure, and not long later, married my Great-Grandma Vincenza 'Jennie' Termine in May 1973.

Joe (Giuseppe) passed away on March 27th, 1979 at the age of eighty-four, in Los Angeles County, California.

My family knew Grandpa Joe. However, we don't know much about his history prior to him coming to the United States. His first wife, did not immigrate with Joe to the United States (at least, not that we can tell). Likewise, there's no record of his son coming to United States. We know nothing about Caterina or Bernardo, or what became of them. Did they find their way to the US? Did they stay in Italy? When did they pass? Where are their final resting places? All questions I would love to find answers to.

I'm hoping to book a trip with my family to Italy in the next couple of years. I'm hoping to include stops to see where our family lived, and to also pay our respects to our family wherever they may be resting.

Any direction or information you all may be able to provide would be absolutely amazing! I appreciate your time and insights!!

Hello Ryan

Here is a link to the Declaration of Intent to Naturalize for "Joe"
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... n&groupId=

The town is unfamiliar to me, and I cannot find it.
Probably misspelled, since Pedivigliano is also misspelled.
Also, the surname "Servagne" does not exist today in Calabria Province.

Do you have an arrival manifest?

EDIT:

Here is a link in Ancestry to the arrival manifest for Giuseppe Servagno, 25, married.
Wife in Pedivigliano.
On page 2, last column, Giuseppe lists his place of birth as Pedivigliano.

That municipality is probably Conflenti in the province of Catanzaro.

Question:
What does “Calfo” stand for?

Hello Farassino, my apologies for the delay. I was thinking the municipality might be Conflenti as well, but, not being familiar with Italy, I couldn't say with any degree of certainty.

You asked "What does 'Calfo' stand for?" ... Unfortunately, we don't know. That was his birth middle name. And, sadly, I can't find any history on him to see if that was a family name that was passed down through the years. All I know was he had been married twice, once to my Grandma Jenny (Vincenza), and he has a son, Bernardo with his first wife Caterina. Beyond that, I'm stumped. I can't find anything on either Caterina or Bernardo, nor can I find anything about Giuseppe's family roots. I don't know who is parents were, if he had siblings, etc.

Thanks for your support and finding what you have. I'll keep trying to dig around.
