I have a direct ancestor referred to as "Donna" Marchese in some civil records. She was born c.1800 in rural Sicily. Her father is referred to as "Don" Marchese in some civil records and, according to the Riveli, he was a land owner with many properties.
I know these are honorific titles.
My question is whether the surname "Marchese" likely suggests royalty in their family's history.
If so, it might be worth researching.
Royalty
Re: Royalty
The surname Marchese does suggest Nobility but not Royalty. I think you should start your research with reading about the distinction between those two terms.

Thanks for the suggestion. At least I didn't get the red font this time.erudita74 wrote: 20 Dec 2025, 14:28 The surname Marchese does suggest Nobility but not Royalty. I think you should start your research with reading about the distinction between those two terms.
