Faint record - Nicolina Bonanno

Post by mjclayton1 »

Hello, Forum-

This is a tough one. The writing is quite faint. Can someone try and translate/correct/fill in the blanks?

Record No. 31
Dated: 27 Feb 1842 at 5:00 PM, in the town hall of Santa Lucia del Mela, appeared Pietro Trifiro, age 50, cattle hand, and Mariano (?) Calderone, age 30 (?), farm hand (?), declared on the 26 of the above month that died _________ (where?) Nicolina Bonanno, age 70 (?), widow of Giuseppe Calderone.... born in this town, occupation ________ (?), daughter of Giuseppe (?), deceased, living _________ and of Carmela _________ (?), defunta (decd.).

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

This one is important in that it would reveal my 5x-great grandparents, seemingly, Giuseppe Bonanno and Carmela ______.

Thanks MUCH in advance.

Mark

I would say you have done an outstanding job with this VERY VERY faint record!
I agree with your interpretation. :-)

Hi, T-

Thanks for your expert eye(s) here. Looking at other nearby records, I see now they refer to church parish/cathedral (parrocchia cattedrale) after the widows's name. That's not terribly important, I know. After Carmela, it refers to the last name and then also "morta", correct? I'm trying to figure out if the last name starts with an "I" or an "S" or an "F", etc. It almost looks like he name could be Impala, or Illaqua... or Filamena...or...? LOL... too many possibilities! I have looked at the indices for several other years for clues/guidance here, but I'm just not sure if what I'm looking at in record No. 18 is part of Carmela's name... or just part of the bad copy/paper/page.

Hopefully, someday it will become clearer to me. Thanks again for your great assistance. (oh, and least I did a bit better than the other day!) 8)

Mark, I'm wondering if Carmela's surname could be Lo Monaco or Monaco. I know that currently Monitto is found in Messina Province, but I think it's found more in the older records in Siracusa province. Anyway, I think I see Mon in the index.

Hi, Erudita-

Nice to hear from you and also have your input here. The writing is so faint that it's just hard to know. I may just end up looking from 1842 backwards for all decedents who have the first name Carmela. Maybe I'll get lucky there.

Thanks.

Hello, Forum-

Revisiting this (distant) past posting. I have a hunch that the last name of Nicolina Bonanno's mother MIGHT be "Morina"...

I've also been looking in Soccorso - a hamlet just to the northwest of Santa Lucia del Mela - as well as Gualtieri Sicamino - also just to the north of Santa Lucia del Mela. I found a possible death record for a Carmela Morina that intrigues me.

Her age at death appears to be 80, which would put her DOB year at about 1745. Given Nicolina was born ca. 1772, that would make some level of sense (her mom, Carmela, being approx. 27 yrs. old at that time).

It's very unfortunate that these records don't refer to the spouse of the decedent. That would, of course, be tremendously helpful to me here.

What are your thoughts (if any)?

Thanks in advance...

Thanks, mmogno. Can you tell me who you think Carmela's parents were? Rocco Morina and Maria ____?

Happy to help you as always, Mark.

The surname is found in Messina and, if you look through the index at the end of this group of records, you’ll find the letter “s” in other surnames formed as in Maria’s surname.
