I think some of you will have already noticed that ancestry has upgraded their immigration records to include ship manifests up to 1955. Unbelievable amount of info and its free for subscribers for 30 days...not sure about new comers but I would suggest anyone interested to log on and check it out to see what they offer.
Go for it! Just found my Dad's manifest. I had trouble finding it but I knew the year and the ship he came on so I just entered the ship name, and year and the first 3 letters of his surname with a * and got 21 hits (as opposed to (9500). He was there. Its pretty exciting even though the manifests don't tell you much in the later years..but it gives a passport number!
This is so great.......found my Nonni's trip to visit family in 1928, as well as the trip by Nonni and Nonno in 1955.......Suanj would remember the 1955
trip......she spoke to cousins for me who told her of the visit......

Visit my website: ITALIAN ORIGIN SEARCH
The newer manifest do not contain alot of info....but it does contain Nonno's passport number.....so that is some new info to!!!!
And something I argue with my mother all the time......Uncle Pappy was not named Medell........it was Amedeo......Medell is but a nickname, and then in the family.......he was called Uncle Pappy..........
Its nice to see the different types of manifests. The more recent ones offer no info on age or place of origin but it does say "tourist" manifest on some. I like that it offers addresses and passport numbers. Sometimes you just know its your relative but other times its a guessing game, isn't it?
I believe I saw "airplane" listing as well. Can't remember now but I will check it out.
I really think anyone who doesn't have a subscription should take full advantage of this opportunity. You never know what you can find...and it is best to start with yourself and work backwards...
Mom still has Dad's original passport. We're going to check the info out against the passport just to see. I would be interested in seeing the real manifest to see if there is any additional info.
By the way, do any of you notice the images aren't as sharp as on the stevemorse site? Could be my imagination but I have been playong with it quite a bit and comparing.
Ever since I was a little boy, my dad would show me my great grandfather's card, and tell me that he was a count in Italy. I was always intrigued by that, but never really thought about asking my grandmother questions, or anyone else for that matter. About ten years ago, as more and more information...
