Arrival on the vessel EVELIJA

This information is on Declaration of Intention papers for Domenico Barilla: Arrived at the port of New York in the State of New York on the 22nd day of March 1903. Emigrated to the United States from Masena (Messina, Sicily) on the vessel Evelija.
I have searched the Ellis Island site but can not find that port or ship.
Is the spelling correct? Any suggestions?

If you cannot find it then perhaps he came in thru another port. Go to www.genealogylookups.com/narchives.htm and file form 81 for all usa entries. Peter

I have not had good luck getting information by filing form 81 in other inquiries. I will try again.
Peter, do you know if EVELIJA is a correct ship name?

There is no record of a ship EVELIJA> Where did you get this name from????Peter

It was on the Declaration of Intention for Naturalization paper filed by Domenico Barilla in 1918. It is probably another case of mis-spelling due to misunderstood pronunciation.

Peter...Is there a listing for ships departing Messina, Sicily in 1903?

none that I am aware of but there is a listing for ships arriving in the USA in 1903. But why don't you request information from Waltham.archives@nara.gov for Bostgon arrival records and furnish them with his name, birthdate, year of arrival, village of origin amd where he settled in the USA. They will e-mail you back if they find a record to match your information and it will cost about $10.00 if they come up with infomration if he came in thru Boston. Send an e-mail and see what they say. Peter

I did file form 81 stating New York as the arrival port. His papers definetly said he arrived in New York. Maybe they can find him. If not I will try the Boston arrival email adddress.

claudia it is difficult to know who made the mistake.. the immigrant or the immigration employee as to port of arrival. maybe it was convenient to put that down so they didn,t to wait for files to be transferred to NY. By the way did you ever think that perhaps the ships name is Evangeline?? Peter

Last years of navigation yes, at least therefore I have understood. The SS Hevelius scrapped in 1903 and 1903 in route for New York, but perhaps me mistake...
