Re: Italian surname

Post by suanj »

ah ok , many thanks... in this day, I searched many hours, and I can say that Vilfordi don't exist and the more similar is Valpreda.. by George signature it is impossible to understand... it seems Larfadi or Larpadi or Largadi or Larzadi... but in any case this surnames version don't exist.. he was naturalized in 1920, and again single... I believe that in the church act marriage perhaps it is possible to find some trace... because in the catholic church the acts are more detaileds... sorry.. I cannot help in this topic.. what i can say that the more near surname of north Italy is Valpreda...... kisses, suanj

Just for informational purposes: He was not born in NY even though it says that on the 1930 census.

Thanks for the searching! I appreciate the tip about the Valpreda surname. I'll try that name and see if I can come up with anything. I have his marriage record from Dallas but it doesn't have any helpful information on it. I don't think they got married in a church or else I could ask the church for their marriage record. Thanks again.

His wife's maiden name was Schell which was originally Augello or something like that. (Her family came from Sicily.) He originally settled in New York City but wound up in Texas which is where he died.

--- This might be beside the point, but may I suggest that the origin of the name Schell might have been Ausciello?

And you probably have thought of this already, but if he was from Lugano, it could mean he was Italian Swiss, rather than from Italy.

Yes, thank you. The last name of my grandmother's family could have originally been Ausciello.

I have been in contact with the Swiss in Lugano and they had no record of my grandfather. But all I could give them was his American last name and one suggestion of a possible different spelling. Since he put Lago Lugano, Italy, as his birth place on one document, we assume he was Italian. As you know, Lake Lugano is in both Switzerland and Italy. He did indicate he was from Italy on the 1920 US census. And family lore also says he was from Italy. So this is why we think he was Italian instead of Swiss Italian. But, I suppose we could be wrong.

On yet a different document, he said he was born in Rome. Then on the 1930 census, he said he was born in New York City! We are pretty sure he was not born in New York City because he told his wife he came from Italy to New York City. She always thought he was from Rome. But then later on, we found the document where he wrote in his handwriting that he was born in Lago Lugano, Italy which is a lake, not a city, right? We don't know what to believe.

If he was born in the Lago Lugano area, I'm thinking maybe he was from somewhere in either the Province of Varese or the Province of Como since these are the Provinces that Lake Lugano is in. But I don't know too much about Italian geography. Thanks for the help!

Just another crazy guess... maybe his orginal name didn't look italian, but he wrote it the way it sounded when he got here:

Wilforte?

A friend of a cousin in Italy had a son named Walter. They pronounced it 'Valtaire.'
