Surname Sgherzi

Hello,


I've tried researching my surname name on the internet through multiple genealogy websites with no luck. I'm not even sure if my name is italian or not, its always sounded different then most italian names. My Father said that his grandparents were from Sicily but I dont know how true that is. I know nothing about my grandparents, I dont know what city they came from or what their first names even were. The only thing I know is that they immigrated to New Jersey.

If you search the Ellis Island ship records www.stevemorse.org , the name Sgherzi does show up, but only a few - mainly from Foggia.

In doing a quick search on ancestry.com, the Sgherzi's I found were from Rodi Garganico and Vico Garganico in Foggia. A number emigrated to Hoboken, NJ

My Grandparents names are Frank and Helen Sgherzi, they were born in New Jersey but I'm not sure about the city, I think it was Jersey City.


My Father's name is Michael Sgherzi he was born 11/12/1955 in Jersey City, NJ. My Father's siblings, Anthony Sgherzi and Jeanine Sgherzi.


And if its any help, my Grandmother's last name before she married was Florence.

Hmmm, I'm not sure. My grandmother was born in or around 1920, I hope I didn't mislead you, my Grandparents are still alive. But I'd like to know about my great-grandparents but I know nothing about them other then they emigrated from Italy and thats it.

The best advice that we can probably give, is to interview all your living relatives. It's truly amazing what comes out in interviews, especially from the older generations. Have a list of questions, ask for family pictures & documents, but also get them to tell their 'stories."

If you do the interviews in person, use a tape recorder. You may get so involved in listening that you'll forget to write things down & sometimes it's a small detail that doesn't seem important now that leads to new discoveries.

Received information about my Great Grandparents from my Grandparents. The only problem is that I cant seem to find a death index for them.

If you are searching the SSDI:

However, the Social Security Death Index is the computerized index to deaths reported and/or death benefits paid out starting in 1962. The SSDI includes a few pre-1962 entries, but the great majority of those included in this index are from 1962 through the present time.


If their deaths occured prior to this time, then you would not find them listed.

it could be that the first child of Frank SGHERZI had the first name as the grand father? It could be Anthony the first male child? If your father Michael born in 1955, most probably Frank it was born abt 1925/30...

I'm a Sgherzi too! My Mothers maiden name is Sgherzi. My grandparents and Aunt came over from Foggia, Italy in 1926 I believe and settled in Hoboken, NJ.

My Grandfather's brothers also came over..Giuseppe and Giovanni.

I wonder if we're related somehow?
