Hrm, I don't know.
In the 1900 and 1910 census they had columns for children, where they said number born, and the number currently living. In 1900 they said they had 8 children/7 living. In 1910 they said they had 12 children/11 living.
In the 1900 census the 7 living children were: Francis, Frank, Anna (? not sure where she was), Josephine (orphanage), Jessie (orphanage), Mary and Clara
In the 1910 census the 11 living children were: Francis (living with her husband?), Frank, Anna, Josephine, Jessie, Mary, Clara, Charles, Anthony, Gertrude, Agnes
They stopped asking that on the 1920 census, I think.
Francis is the oldest listed as being born in 1886. I bet she was married in 1910 and living with her husband. All of the children are listed as birthplace New York, so maybe they had a child who died in Italy, then they came either together.
Also, maybe while she pregnant before they got married. She was studying to be a nun and Charles was the gardener and talked to her thru the gate. My family also tells the story that he talked her into being married. Maybe they were a little too friendly and that's why she left the convent.
Just guessing ... good question too. The ages made me wonder.
I spent hours trying to find a ship into New York with anyone named Maria, or Grazia, or Maria Grazia that seemed likely, but its just too hard to know without a surname I think.
Thanks!
