Wow ... so fast a response! I'm still posting links.

:)

Suanj, can you make out Antonio's last name? We don't know it.

Here are the links to the zoomed portion of Calogero's document

Am I reading the baptism section right to say that he was baptised at the Chiesa Madre in Valledolmo? I can't read the month/day, but I know the year is 1864.

His mother's name looks like Francesca Maggio to me ... which is new information too for us. Does that seem right? And she's 36? when he was born, so perhaps he had some older siblings.

Oh also, my mother went to visit family in New York a week ago. They went to all the graveyards and some of the names are MANCUSO, but most are MANGUSO for the older people. They were all shortened to MANGUS eventually. My mother said an older cousin said that it was MANGUSO named after the mongoose? Is that true that the word means that?

Thanks!

They are both MANCUSO/MANGUSO?

Grazia's parents:
Father: Antonino Mancuso
Mother: Crocifissa Jacono

Calogero's Parents:
Father: Francisco Mancuso (or mebbe Manguso)
Mother: Francesca Maggio

Does that look right?

Do both birth records show them being born in Valledolmo? If I was going to try to track down the parish baptismal records, can anyone read the church names where they were baptised?

Thanks!

I have been using the lds films but have not seen parish records, how does one go about tracking parish records?

Thanks Suanj, that's what I thought too, but my mother insisted that whole thing about MANGUSO!

Littleapple, I'm a newbie to this ... but when I did a search for all the available Roccapalumba records thru LDS, there was a set from the Ufficio dello stato civile and a set from the Registri ecclesiastici from Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli there. These include Battesimi, Matrimoni, Morti, and Processetti (not sure what those are).

If the LDS films don't have the ecclesiastical records for the parish then I imagine you need to write or visit personally. That's why I was asking if anyone could make out the church name/parish for Valledolmo on those two birth certificates. I'll be in Valledolmo next month and wanted to know where to look.

Of course, I could be wrong about how to go about this. Just my best guess.

Maria,

Maybe this list may help you too in the future with terms used..

http://www.roangelo.net/vocabula.html

From this link, here is the definition..

processetti matrimoniali: documents required by the
civil authority for marriage (also called
allegati): birth certificates (atti di nascita) of
the spouses (and for when weddings took place only
at church: proof of baptism); death certificates
of deceased parents (atti di morte) (and when a
father was deceased, also the death certificate of
his father), since people, regardless of their
age, could not marry without parental consent;
summary of the marriage banns (pubblicazioni) with
testimony that they had been posted for the period
required by law; and for when weddings took place
only at church: a notation (indicazione) by the
parish priest that the wedding had taken place.
The decision of a Consiglio di famiglia also
belongs among the processetti. See atto di
matrimonio and atto della solenne promessa, and
this description of the role of processetti in
family history research.

Thanks Nuccia. That looks very helpful!

No, I'm not especially close Littleapple, I'm in California. It'll be the first time anyone in my family has travelled back to Italy at least in the last three generations. So everyone is very excited that I'm going. I hope to learn enough that I can visit places where we likely have/had relatives.

Thanks for the good wishes!

Have a wonderful trip, I was lucky enough to visit my parents hometown of Bonefro with them while my grandparents were alive here in Canada. I have since returned numerous times and I am very close to some of the distant relatives there. It is an awesome experience to go back and be connected.

In some other news, I was very excited today to receive from the social security administration the original application for Ignazio Sammartino, whose draft cards and Ellis Island manifests we located at the beginning of the thread.

This had his birthplace confirmed as Roccapalumba and also his parents names. So this is wonderful news, as it will help me narrow down that side of my maternal grandfather's family!

Oh! One more piece of help ... Nuccia posted for me the image of Ignazio's WWI draft card. Can anyone tell what his wife's name is?

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7921/imagexgq8.jpg

It looks like Auteria or Guteria or something to me, but I'm too unfamiliar with female Italian names to know if that's likely. I don't see either of those on the usual lists of names.

Thanks!

according to her 1907 ship manifest,
it should be 'Antonia'

1907 manifest
page 2
lines 22-25
Antonia & children
(line 27 may be her brother)
