Aborted Voyage
Peter/Suanj
My father told me that soon after he left Italy (probably late summer 1919) the ship sank or ran aground. They were rescued and taken to Sardinia (or Corsica), then back to the mainland. It was 6 months before they could get another ship to take them to the US.
Is there any way to discover some details about the ship that sank? Since it never got to Ellis Island, those records don't help.
Thanks,
T. Bottegal

Hi Suanj,
Thanks for your reply. I had not seen that site before.
They seem to show mostly ships to/from England, and mostly in the 1800's. I found many hits using the search, but none for the area and year I am interested in (Genoa, summer 1920).
If you come across any other information that might help, please let me know.
Thanks again,

Hi Peter,
No, I do not know the name of the ship (my father was only 8; his mother died shortly after arriving), nor even the exact date of departure (my message above should have said 'late summer 1919'). My only thought is to find a list of shipping companies (Genoa to Ellis) active during that period and see if they still have records.
Any other ideas appreciated.
Thanks,
TBottegal

I know they sunk but your San Girogio was a cargo ship..it carried no passengbers only merchandise. The passengber liner San Giorgio was changed to Napoli in 1921 and was first owned by the Sicula Italiano line and then sold to another italian company to continue in the transatlantic immigrant trade. Hi Suanj & Peter,
Thanks for another link and the ideas. One or two of the ships are close enough to look at in more detail.
The last website you mentioned is for scuba divers - they would only list those ships where 1) its location on the ocean floor was known and 2) it has not been raised for salvage.
I will try to locate the shipping companies and see if they still have records after all these years. Even the companies my be gone at this point.
