Sicilian Jewish Heritage

Post by myra »

The Jews lived in Sicily until 1492 when during the Spanish Inquisition they were forced out. I am trying to find out if I have Jewish roots. Many of my family members "looked" Jewish and we were always referred to as "the Jews". I have been unable to make a solid connection. Some of the family names are: Alletto, Cammaratta, Barbaro, and Mortalara. If anyone can help, PLEASE DO!

More: currently Cammaratta surname not exist in Italy..exist only in Usa, probable coming from misspelling italian surname: Cammarata(present in 141 sicialian commons) and Cammarota(present in 4 sicialian commons)...also Mortalara not exist in Italy...but very probable exact spelling this surname is Mortellaro(present in 31 sicialian Commons)..Barbaro: present in 64 sicialian commons; Aletto:in 25 Commons....More: Cammarata surname is very ancient and of noble origin: an Lucia Cammarata noble woman in 1175, judicial argument gained against bishop of Cefalù it was recognized real Milady of "Miccichè Feudo-Villalba-Sicily"...they do not turn out these last names of Hebrew origin ... but for your double please visite this italian hebrew website http://www.morasha.it/ and send an email with your topic to : redazion@morasha.it
good luck!!

Moreover, currently Cammarata surname in Italy is connected with the Hebrew culture...
Cammarata (Roma)http://www.romacivica.net/anpiroma/anti ... sti51.html
Cammarata(Sicilia)hebrew art-around 1300-1400
http://www.exibart.com/txt/notizia.asp? ... tegoria=79

More on familysearch.org, Cammaratta surname in the past existed in Italy and especially in Sicily. From reading are records of Cammaratta persons christening, and Cammaratta persons not christening, only birthdates...this can mean that were not Christian

Dear Sandra I recall having had to deal with your inability to answer questions on the different forums inadequately. You are way off in furnishing the information that the poster wanted. By furnishing superflous information all you do is confuse the reader since it does not make genealogy sense. Please try another forum which is easier for you to handle. Thank you. Peter

Peter,

If Myra thinks I am not helping... let this person say it to me on the forum. It is not your duty to respond to my post but to the person who is doing the posting. Just respond to them not to me. I'm sure the people in this forum do not want to see nor hear a battle going on between us. Stop, playing this childs game. If I am useless to the people on this forum I am sure they will say so. I know they can speak for themself.

I don't have time for you. Now, please Peter, don't be a humbug and just enjoy the holidays.

Peter, seems to have fun bashing me all over the place in this forum and why I don't know and I really don't care.

Thanks Peter and Happy Holidays to you and yours.

I reserve to myself the right to tell you when your out of the loop when it cvomes to italian genealogy. You seem to think that people can trace their families with whatever you put down without any regard to what they are seeking or how do they go about obtaining it.

I recall when you were trying to trace your family from Puerto Rico to Italy and no amount of effort in trying to assist you made any difference. You live in your own world when it comes to genealogy. Peter
