Surname "Silo"

Post by bxcsw »

I am researching my father's line of ancestry and it traces back to the Belfast area of Northern Ireland. The family name is "Silo", and I found that "Modesto Silo" is in the 1851 Belfast directory as a carver, guilder, and Italian interperter. Some of Modesto's children have the names Carlo, Rosa, and Modesto. I am thinking that the Silo family may have come from Italy to Northern Ireland around 1800-1848, but I have not found any Silo in any Italian surname lists.
Any help would be appriciated.

There are currently 45 SILO surnames in Italy with 60% between Rome and Naples areas and the remaing 40% distributed thruout northern Italy. Since you did not even manage to locate the surname in Italy, it needs be that you do your homework and get back to me with full names, towns, of origin or provinces and yeah evem region if you know. Any evidence or family hearsay will be another boost to the family fortue. Please get back to me with more info...Peter

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, the only additional info I have is that Modesto Silo married a woman with the surname Luigi. A family story is that Modesto Silo was from a prominant family, (unknown area), and he married and left Italy because his family disapproved of the marriage to Ms Luigi. This is how he left Italy and went to Belfast NI. in the early to mid 1800's. Like I said, I have very little info. I am in the process of trying to find out more on the Irish end for example, Irish immigration records, etc.
Thanks,
M. Silo

I seem to recall we went thru this business some time ago and there was an italian reference to Pieto Silo from Milano and there is a listing for Modesto Silo whose parents were Geroge Louis Silo and Lizzy Liddle who were married in Scotland and presumably emigrated to Ireland. Go to www.familysearch,org under census and ancestor search. Peter

Thanks Peter and suanj,
Yes, George Louis Silo and Lizzie Little did have a son, Modesto. George Luis' father was also named Modesto and it is he who married a women named Luigi.
I will check the sites and Italian clubs in Ireland.
Thank you both so much for your help!
