Trying to find grandfather's Birthplace in Calabria

Post by langelo »

I am trying to gather documents to obtain Italian dual citizenship through my paternal grandfather, Ignazio Girimonte.

This I know:

He had a family in San Giovanni in Fiore. His wife and several children were born there. I have been able to obtain my grandmother's and uncles birth certificates from San Giovanni in Fiore. However, there is no record of his birth or marriage in that comune.

I have written to numerous other comunes and to provinces di Consenza, Catanzaro and Crotone, but get no replies, despite requests with cash included.

His naturalization papers indicate he was born on May 18, 1857 but the birthplace is not noted. I have also checked passengers lists for ships entering Boston, New York and Canada and cannot locate him. He is listed on US census as being from "Italy".

I would love to get help with any Italian agencies that have vital records and who might answer my letters.

Thank you so much.

Langelo,

You need to contact Bill Girimonti from Il Circolo Calabrese and La Famiglia Girimonte. He might be able to help.

Hello Lois,
My ancestry is also from San Giovanni in Fiore and the surrounding villages. Do you know the names of Ignazio's parents?

I think you letters have been stolen before arriving at destination. Try to contact Comune and Provincia asking alternative method to send money (money tranfer or similar) or ask at your local post office a secure method to send cash (in Italy this is called "posta assicurata").

a my suggestion:
the better thing is to ask the LISTA DI LEVA in Cosenza's State Archive, needing of to know almost the probable birthyear... :

Ufficio di leva di Cosenza, ~011. 7 3 ( c l a s s i /birthyears from 1 8 4 2 - to 1 9 1 7 ) : (liste di leva >. Elenchi.
D i s t r e t t o m i l i t a r e d i C o s e n z a , r e g g . 2 9 5 ( c l a s s i /birthyears from 1843 to 1902):< Ruoli matricolari >. Rubriche.
Comprendono anche quelli del distretto militare di Castrovillari, soppresso nel 1930.

Oh my gosh as well. Have scoured ships manifests previously but this looks like it might have some legs! Also, the info about checking on Filomena's ship. I have been in contact with Bill G., and he is also perplexed about my grandfather's lack of birth records in San Giovanni.

I believe his father was Antonio Girimonte and mother was Maria Greco. I was able to trace his nephew/brother up to that family. There is some discrepancy on Bill's website re: Ignazio. Interesting fact is that a middle sister Angela was born in Isola Capo di Rizzuto, the only one in the family. Prior children and the last child were born in San Giovanni.

I am wondering if "Angela" is really "Ignazio". Start to get kind of crazy trying to solve it all.

I have sent letter twice to Capo di Rizzuto and also province of Crotone and Catanzaro to see if he may have been born there.

Many, many thanks for the wonderful leads.

Just a note of human interest. The kind person who placed the info re: 1930 census located a Louis Ignatius who was 5 years old at that time.

This little boy, an only child, who lost his mother at birth and was raised by my grandmother, Filomena, was injured during the WWII D Day invasion in Normandy, but lived to marry and have 4 children and 14 grandchildren.

This search can be frustrating at times, but wow, does it help me to learn how brave our Italian ancestors were and all the trials, tribulations, and true grief they endured to just survive. However, the families seemed to stay very close which is great support, something many of us do not have today.

Lois,
There is a small village near San Giovanni in Fiore called Casino (or Castelsilano). Many of the same families live in this town. In 1849 in Casino a certain Antonio Girimonte and his wife Maria Teresa Gallo had a daughter named Maria Rosa. Then in 1851 the couple had Antonia. Then in 1854, Filomena. How certain are you of the name Maria Greco?

Feel free to email me or send me a private message and I can give you more details.

That is very interesting information. I am going by Bill Girimonte's family website that states Maria Rosa Greco was the mother of Ignazio's brother Salvatore. With your information, I will send for Sal's birth certificate to see the mother's name. Great tip. Thanks so much Donna!

Hi Donna,

Just wondering how you found the info on Girimonte/Gallo family in Casino? Really hoping that Ignazio is a part of that clan.

Thanks so much again,
Lois
